I have the HV20 with the Canon WD-H43 wide-convertor and really love it. But besides having no front thread it has no lens hood. Hand holding the cam and having been caught needing a hood, here's a quick way of forming one that may help others.

Holding the cam with the right hand for the start/stop/zoom .. cup your left hand around the front of the H43 with your left thumb under around the front of the lens to support it and your left fingers over the top as a hood. While zooming/framing you can lower your 'hood' to be just out of frame.

Quick, handy and cheap .. it steadies the HV20 and its saved my butt a few times now.

Cheers.

Do that too, (though I wasn't going to admit it publicly)! I've even used both hands on a tripod shot.

When I need my small rig (HV-30 in my case) to look a bit more impressive I pimp up the WD-H43 with the lens hood from my XH-A1 as suggested by Taky Cheung, though I find a layer of black PVC tape round the WD-H43 makes it fit better. (see pics) When the rest of the gear is added, furry dead cat, PAGlight, radio receiver it looks like a real camera. Though I must say that it behaves like one without all the bling attached.

I do like an external mic though. I found the front mounted mics on the older Sonys worked much better than these rather silly top mounted ones on the Canons.

Apologies for poor quality iPhone images.
