I got vegas pro 9.0 and though my rig does do the job of editing avchd it stutters sometimes so I was wondering if it is possible to convert avchd to a different format, edit with that, then convert back to the original file type, if so how do I do it? If not, what can I do with vegas (settings etc) to make avchd run smoother?

A commonly used digital intermediate format for HD editing is Cineform.avi.
It's lightly compressed compared to AVCHD, and far less demanding of system resources.
Once you have converted to Cineform, it doesn't matter what the original format was, so you can do multi cam shoots in different formats and edit it all in the same high quality HD codec.
From your finished Cineform project, you can render out to whatever delivery format is desired.
IMO, this is much easier and more straightforward than trying to use actual proxy files for editing.

What do you have the preview monitor set at? You have lots of choices and they all effect playback performance. If you need fluid motion for editing then choose DRAFT AUTO or PREVIEW AUTO and see if that will work. For examining fine detail or color etc choose BEST FULL and then step through if it will not run smoothly. Also the size of your preview window means that the PC will have to re-scale so if this is set for the output pixels chosen it will also help.

besides the Cineform codec i've found that Avid's DNxHD Codec also works great as an intermediate codec. Plus it's free.

Iker, I went on the Avid site & could not find Avid's DNxHD Codec. Can you please forward a link as I would like to try it.
