View Full Version : The Canon 60D has arrived
Alan Halfhill August 26th, 2010, 12:04 AM Here it is. Manual audio level, vari-angle LCD, SD cards, smaller and lighter than 7D.
Canon EOS 60D Hands-on Preview: 1. Introduction: Digital Photography Review (http://www.dpreview.com/previews/canoneos60d/)
Evan C. King August 26th, 2010, 12:10 AM Canon U.S.A. : Consumer & Home Office : EOS 60D (http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/slr_cameras/eos_60d)
I have to admit a rotating, better in sunlight is making my 7D a little jealous.
Floris van Eck August 26th, 2010, 12:49 AM Keep in mind that they changed the positioning of this camera. It is now below the 7D and above the 550D whereas the old 50D was positioned in place of the 7D. This means the build quality of this camera is below the build quality of the old 50D... lightweight and more plastic like the 550D.
The specifications looks nice though. But I want to see what Nikon is going to do with the D90 replacement and the D700 replacement. Not yet buying into a DSLR system at this moment.
Mel Enriquez August 26th, 2010, 01:01 AM Since this is a video site, I am guessing that as far as video goes, the video performance will be the same as the 7d/550d. The flip screen however, will prove a god-send as it will make the process of looking at the subject much easier.
I like the camera and at U$1,100 at the start, it's a good price to get that articulating LCD and other goodies. I don't care much about the plastic body. That is a polycarbonate body, so that is not just ordinary plastic. I don't mind it is not magnesium alloy like before. There are a host of features that still make it better as a still camera compared to the 550d. The wireless flash trigger is good, and that raw converter in body can be useful. The lost the joystick button w/c I like, but I can live with that.
At the same time, it does not threaten the 7D. .
The Sony alpha 55 and 33 though is also something worth looking at. Unfortunately, I have canon lenses. Though for video and if I were to just get some basic lenses (kit and maybe a prime, or just get an adapter for Canon lenses) it might work. At U$850 with the 18-55 kit lens, it's a good starter. I can get the upcoming 85 f2.8 lens for U$250 and maybe another prime, I should be ok. If primarily for video, maybe the a55 is worth looking at as an option vs the new 60d. Will make more study on this later.
For it's price, the 60d is pretty decent. It really sits between the 7d and 550d.
Jack Tran August 26th, 2010, 01:03 AM Just a couple of notes that stood out to me:
1. articulating screen!
2. has manual audio controls (5Dmk2 and 60D; dont expect the 1dmk4,7D,t2i to get the manual audio firmware upgrade)
3. uses sd cards. [i have too many 32gb UDMA CF cards! I need the super fast transfer speeds!!]
4. didnt fix/address hdmi issue
Points 1 and 2 should draw more buyers to Canon.
Sony and Nikon is WAYYY behind... Panasonic w/ the AF100 is okay.
Mark Grgurev August 26th, 2010, 01:17 AM Just found this 60D Product walkthrough video on Youtube. This could possibly be shot on the 60D.

Robert Turchick August 26th, 2010, 01:18 AM The only thing I would like to see is if the hdmi out switches resolution upon record like the 5d and t2i or is it like the 7d and stays at 1080.
Something tells me with a single processor, it will be more like the t2i and 5d in which case, 7d here I come!
Jay Massengill August 26th, 2010, 08:41 AM I'm just reading this article myself. Looks very interesting.
Paul Cook August 26th, 2010, 08:42 AM Anyone know if this will output a full HD signal while recording like the 7D does?
Robert Turchick August 26th, 2010, 08:59 AM Until they come out and somebody can verify it,I think that's the million dollar (or at least $600 move up to the 7d) question.
Bryan McCullough August 26th, 2010, 10:52 AM Will the 60D have in-between ISOs like the 7D? I've got a 7D and a T2i and that has been a significant difference for me between the two.

DP Review says "The 60D loses the PC sync terminal but gains the ability to control a group of flahsguns wirelessly - a feature that first appeared on the EOS 7D".
Dave Eaton August 26th, 2010, 08:41 PM The 60D is on the Canon website now:
ISO Speed Range
- ISO 100 - 6400 (in 1/3-stop or whole-stop increments)
- ISO 12800 can be enabled with a Custom Function.
- With [Highlight tone priority], the ISO speed range will be automatically set within 200-6400.

Mark Grgurev August 27th, 2010, 12:11 AM I can't seem to find anything that says there is a recording limit to the video. I'm really hoping there's no length limit.
Michael Murie August 27th, 2010, 05:51 AM It has the same 4 GB limit (i.e. about 12 minutes)
"Video can be captured at a number of resolutions and frame rates for numerous applications. It can capture 1920 x 1080 Full HD video at frame rates of 30 (29.97 fps), 24 (23.976 fps) and 25.0 frames per second, for up to 4GB per clip"

Nathan Nazeck August 27th, 2010, 07:56 AM 1/3 stop ISO and Kelvin WB... Two big big things missing from the t2i are on this camera... If the higher ISO's are as clean as a 7D there won't be much of a reason left to stay with a 7 over the 60... Articulating screen, SD cards instead of CF, and manual audio control... It beats the 7 in several things as long as the iso is clean...
Jason Lowe August 27th, 2010, 10:47 AM I'm really interested in this camera. I find the dial controls and top display on my 40D so much nicer than the rebel controls, and I thought the t2i was too small when I played with it in the store. This is a nice compromise for someone who wants more pro features but is on a tighter budget. I'm sure the newer features in this will find their way to other models sooner or later.
Of course, if this drives the price of the t2i and 7D down a few bucks as well, that would be nice.
Man Yip August 27th, 2010, 11:32 AM For the rebel owner, 60D is a perfect upgrade without breaking the bank.
From the inside, T2i, 60D and 7D are all the same, they all take excellent picture and same video quality. What makes them different are the functions of the camera and the body.
One thing that makes 60D stand out is the price range. At $1100, it doesn't have the small body as the T2i, professional look of the 7D with some 7D functions and swivel screen.
However, if any of you are looking to buy a new cam and considering the 60d. Maybe you should reconsider the T2i and 7D, because of the printer rebate going on at BH or Amazon.
I pull the trigger on a 7D yesterday even through Canon just announce the 60D, I would wait a little because the 7D will definitely drop in price further, but I need it now. Also, I can get a free professional printer and I also do photography, the 7D has better AF system, better viewfinder, faster burst rate and better body construction.
One interesting thing is that the T2i, 60D and 7D are exact $300 different in price. $800 for the T21, $1100 for 60D and $1534 for the 7D. So there you go, if you looking for something exactly in between of the T2i and 7D, Canon has already help you to decide.
As for filming, these cameras are almost the same because of the magic lantern.
On a budge, T2i.
Swivel screen and some professional function, 60d.
Full metal jacket, 7d.
Full frame, 5dMkII
Marc Brackhahn August 27th, 2010, 12:41 PM So, does the 60D have AF with video? I can't tell from what I've read. Does anyone have anything definitive? Thanks!

I read that it does but haven't seen anything that specifically says auto focuses while shooting video. Maybe some of the online videos will give a clue?
The specs on Canon's site seem to say AF in Live mode:
Shooting Modes
(1) Live View shooting
(2) Remote Live View shooting (with a personal computer installed with EOS Utility)
Focusing
Autofocus (One-Shot AF)
1. Live mode - One-point, contrast AF. Switching to another AF point possible.
2. Face Detection Live mode - Face Detection, Contrast AF. Face selectable.
3. Quick mode - Nine-point, phase-difference AF, same as normal shooting.
Manual focus - Magnify the image by 5x or 10x and focus manually.

Not according to Gizmodo's write-up:
"Which means video and Live View autofocus ain't any better, unlike Nikon and Sony's latest"
Canon 60D Impressions: The Perfect Video DSLR Is Just a Little Bit Closer (http://gizmodo.com/5622239/canon-60d-brings-the-perfect-video-dslr-just-a-little-bit-closer)
and the comparison chart at dpreview doesn't list it:

Paulo Teixeira August 27th, 2010, 06:26 PM Having an articulating screen is a HUGE bonus. I'm glad Canon finally decided to put one in a DSLR for a change.
Jason Lowe August 28th, 2010, 10:51 AM The Gizmodo article said the 60D has a built in tilt-shift filter. I wonder if this works with the video mode. Would be interesting if it worked with video in time-lapse mode.
This is definitely more of a "super rebel" than an entry level pro camera. Notice in Canon's introductory video that the guy never once uses the camera in the traditional manner, but just uses the LCD display?
Jean-Philippe Archibald August 28th, 2010, 11:30 AM There is no timelapse mode. To do timelapse with a DSLR, you take a serie of still pictures with an intervalometer. So yes, you will be able to use the tilt-shift filter for timelapses.
Jason Lowe September 22nd, 2010, 11:55 AM Looks like these are starting to show up in the retail channels. Can't wait to see some real world results
Guy McLoughlin September 22nd, 2010, 12:52 PM I just bought a 60D last night for for $1,030 Canadian. I was planning on buying a 7D, but the price was too good to turn down.
