Ive been researching follow focus products since the Zacuto and Redrock are a bit out of my price-range. I stumbled upon the D-Focus System products.

Has anyone tried these? If so, how are they? Ive seen fairly positive reviews online

I am generall a DIY builder of my own equipment, and this product was inexpensive enough to meet my budget. I started working with it about a year ago. See this Vimeo spot I did, showing what I was then doing with my 5d and DFocus, et al.

Since then, I have updated gearing and gear rings, once as new products came out, and I like the improvements Dave is making there. Dave was also easy to contact about status of orders, etc.

Although I haven't tried the D-Focus, I think I'd have a problem with its narrow pull gear. Also, the Zacuto, Redrock, and especially the Cinevate (that all have wider gears) will most likely work better on quirky lenses (if you are into that). But whatever you do -- stay away from the cheap Indian stuff.

Although I haven't tried the D-Focus, I think I'd have a problem with its narrow pull gear. Also, the Zacuto, Redrock, and especially the Cinevate (that have all wider gears) will most likely work better on quirky lenses (if you are into that). But whatever you do -- stay away from the cheap Indian stuff.

They key word is price range. If the Zacuto and Red Rock are out of your price range than I'm going to guess that you are doing this as a hobby or semi professionally. If that is the case then the D-Focus system or the "Cheap Indian one's" as another member put it are absolutely perfect for you. If you are new to FF then they will be great fr you to learn on for when you transition to higher end equipment you will already have developed a steady hand from fidgeting with the lower end gear. I use the D-Focus and have not had any problems with it at all. Would i like a Zacuto or Red Rock gear...Of Course. But it's like a car. Would i want a Porsche, of course, but a Honda will get me to where I need to go just fine. :)

Initially also I started out with inexpensive gear, mostly from India. This, however, I can only describe as a BIG mistake. Except for the little money I could recoup by later selling a few of the items, getting this cheap Indian stuff was like flushing dough down the drain, (the last piece, their follow focus, broke a few months ago).

If I only knew back then what I know now, I could've saved quite a bit of money by going with Redrock (or even Zacuto) to start with -- I've now built a new rig with mostly Redrock parts (including their follow focus) and some CPM carbon fiber stuff. Later on I'll write a review and post pictures.

Well, also being wised-up from several prior car failures, I caved in and got me the most reliable car there is -- a Porsche.
