Hi Guys,

can anyone tell me how to capture a live feed to a Mac laptop via the firewire out port on either my EX3 or EX1??. Obviously these cams output HD via the firewire I understand. The captured file needs to be in a .MOV format.

Basically I shoot rugby, and the coach wants to capture the game live so he has a MOV file on his mac when he gets home. I presume it has IMovie on it, can this be used for capture, I am a PC person so I have absolutely no idea about how to do this, any help or advice most appreciated,

cheers

Stuart

What I can tell you:

The EX1 or EX3 will output HDV over the firewire port if the camera is in SP mode and the firewire port is activated.

Most edit applications are quite capable of capturing HDV.

A Mac with FCP or FCE would capture it to a .mov file using the HDV codec, not sure about other applications.

iMovie captures HDV and records it using a special intermediate codec (AIC). AIC is used by iMovie to handle HDV clips, it will not work with vanilla HDV.

Most PC's capture HDV as .m2t files, the native HDV codec.

Most of the common Mac applications don't like .m2t files, they must be .mov

You should find it quite simple to capture the HDV with iMovie. Most Mac apps are drag and drop based.
