Does anyone know whether two Canon XL1 cameras can be sync'd up on timecode for a two camera shoot?

There is no practical way that I'm aware of. Your best bet is to mark the beginning of each shot with a clapper or a photo flash, anything you can use as a common reference point to help you line up the video tracks of each camera angle during postproduction.

If you can graduate to the XL2, then you do have an option,

Thanks for the response about XL1 and timecode question.

Just wondering why the remote feature on the XLI won't sync the cameras as it will for the XL2?

Because unlike the XL2, the XL1 and XL1S lack the ability to set a specific timecode value.

You can certainly trigger multiple XL1 / XL1S cameras to start recording at the same time using a remote control, but the TC values won't necessarily be the same among all of the them. If you need all camcorders to share frame-accurate TC, then they've got to be XL2 models.
