can somebody explain how the matrox works? is it just live editing mixing to your mac?

For all the wonderful things the MXO family does, live mixing is NOT one.

The MXO2 family is essentially an input/output solution that allows for input and/or output of analog and digital video and audio sources one at a time. A VERY ELEGANT solution, but "merely" an I/O solution never the less.

I use the Matrox MXO2 Mini with Max out in the field. I use it for two things:

Monitoring the timeline with a large consumer grade HDMI monitor
Accelerating H.264 output

If you don't need to do either of these things, you don't really need one.

I also have the AJA IO Express which is basically the same box, but with HD-SDI IO. Matrox's version would be called the MXO2LE.

We use the AJA IO Express units to Capture HD-SDI from the camera direct to ProResHQ on a 17" laptop. This allows for capturing a much higher data rate than the camera is capable of. ProRes HQ is 220mbps rather than the cameras 35mbps. It makes a big difference when chroma keying since you're able store so much more color information and pixel information.

Here is a little video I did on the Intensity Pro, which is alot like the Matrox, except it's a PCIe card for a desktop unit only. With the Matrox MXO2 family and the AJA IO Express, you can get Express34 cards or PCI-e cards to use them in a desktop or a laptop.
