Hi all

what shotgun condenser will fit in the Z1 mic holder?

i was looking to buy rode ntg 2?

I want to use it instead of purchasing a boom pole and hiring a sound operator

I don't know the specific answer but I would recommend that whichever microphone you buy you also buy a proper spring-suspension shockmount for it. There is one which fits into the Z1 clip, though I can't recall the manufacturer. The Z1 mount transmits too much handling noise for my liking and the additional mount also swings the mic further away from the lens..

Rode makes 2 types of shockmounts which work with the NTG-2. One mounts in the shoe mount, while the other mounts in the mic holder.

If it's going to be used in place of a boom pole then it's best to have it shock-mounted. The only time I wouldn't bother shock-mounting is when it's not your primary source (ie you have another mic plugged in) and you just want that mic as a back-up or sratch track.

I would recommend either the Rode NTG-2 (batteries or phantom) or NTG-1 (phantom power only). Great sounding mics for the money.

I assume you understand the ramifications of using a camera mic opposed to a boom pole and/or hiring a sound operator. The sound would be far different in most instances, no matter what mic you choose. That said, I also recommend using a shock mount.

I own the z1 and the mic holder has "wiggle room" to fit most any non hand held condenser mic.
