View Full Version : Can I conform frame rates 30fps to 25fps in Vegas
Sassi Haham May 3rd, 2010, 08:38 AM All my footage is 30fps and I would like it rendered to 25fps (changing the duration of each clip).
I read somewhere that it is a very simple procedure in FCP.
How can I achieve this in Vegas ? for a single clip ? for the whole time line ?
Thanks
Sassi Haham May 21st, 2010, 10:26 PM Did a two stage test.
Original footage is 30fps, two clips total running time 31sec (with a 30fps timeline).
1. Changed timeline to 25fps, checked disable resample, changed playback rate to 0.8333..., rendered at 25fps. The resulting clip was stretched to 37.05 sec .
2. Changed timeline to 25fps, checked disable resample, haven't changed playback rate !, rendered at 25fps. The resulting clip was 31 sec length as original .
In both resulting clips , when viewing in best i could see nice definite frames, so I am confused.
Obviously I would like vegas to utilize only original frames and not interpolated ones .
Thx Sassi
Sassi Haham May 24th, 2010, 12:59 AM BTW, I think in both cases there are interpolated frames.
Is it possible that Vegas don't have solution for this ?
Glenn Thomas May 24th, 2010, 02:55 AM Method 1. is what I use.
If you don't change the playback rate to 0.833, you'll end up with frames being skipped which will make your video look a bit glitchy. Also remember to stretch the audio track to the stretched video. Set the stretch algorithm to Elastique Pro.
Sassi Haham May 24th, 2010, 07:06 AM Thanks for replying Glenn,
Where do I find "Set the stretch algorithm to Elastique Pro" ?
Prech Marton May 25th, 2010, 12:10 AM so you want a little slow-mo using all original frame, without interpolation?
Sassi Haham May 25th, 2010, 06:38 AM I just need the footage at PAL frame rate .
The little slowmo is OK or even good, as I shoot birds.
Prech Marton May 25th, 2010, 08:08 AM exactly what i also want!
can it be done only in vegas?
Function something like interpret footage in AE?
Mike Kujbida May 25th, 2010, 11:37 AM Sassi, just for my own personal clarification, do you have NTSC (30 fps) footage that you want to convert to PAL (25 fps) format?
Sassi Haham May 25th, 2010, 01:04 PM Hi Mike,
Footage is 30 fps (exact, not 29.976) witch originated from GH-1 MJPEG (PAL camera).
Mike Kujbida May 25th, 2010, 01:15 PM Thanks Sassi.
I have to say that I'm surprised at a PAL camera shooting 30 fps.
Sassi Haham May 25th, 2010, 08:17 PM PAL Panasonic GH-1 takes 1080i50 AVCHD, 720p50 AVCHD and 720p30 MJPEG.
Yes unfortunately it shoots 30fps for MJPEG mode and not 25fps, the avantage of the MJPEG mode is it being intraframe and thus suitable for high motion footage.
But it doesn't really matter as I think this is a basic need that Vegas doesn't address.
Why not make a CONFORM switch that will use discreet frames and strech the timeline ?
Glenn Thomas May 31st, 2010, 02:56 AM If you're using Vegas 9, the stretch option can be accessed just by righting clicking on the audio part of the clip and selecting properties. If you're using an old version with no Elastique Pro, it's not a huge issues .. It's just the audio may not sound as nice.
These videos of mine below were converted from 30P to 25P. It works and it's simple to do! The 0.8333 playback rate with disable resample, and audio stretched the video is all you need.

Prech Marton May 31st, 2010, 03:03 AM You say
"0.8333 playback rate with disable resample" is all what we have to set
for interpret 30fps movie to 25 without any interpolation?
What about vegas8?
Glenn Thomas May 31st, 2010, 03:19 AM If the footage is 30P and not 60i or 50i, you won't need interpolation. Interpolation is more for when you're converting 50i to 25P and creating individual frames from each field.
0.833 is not an exact number. It's actually an infinite 0.833333333333 The disable resample resample needs to be turned on to stop any frames being blended together. If you were going from 30P to 24P the playback rate would need to be 0.8. That is an exact number, in which case you wouldn't need to disable the resampling. I hope this makes sense?
Prech Marton May 31st, 2010, 03:27 AM Hmm. I have 60i footege, and want to use as 50i (with little slow mo of course),
but without interpolating. So this method dont work for interlaced video?
Ian Newland June 6th, 2010, 12:57 AM I edit exclusively in Vegas, but any retiming or frame rate changes i need to make i use TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress. I find it does by far the best correct conversion, even for NTSC to PAL, much better than the poor job Vegas does. It also handles cineform files if you are working with them.
Built into TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress is also a good video noise filter and some other worthwhile filters not in Vegas, so they are a bonus.
