I need to do lots of file conversion to ProRes format, so I need a Mac. I see a Macbook on CraigsList that I'm considering. Comes with FCP3. All for $800

I know it doesn't have firewire like the Pro, but will it actually run FCP?

Technically yes, but since the video card is minimalistic at best and, you have no reliable method for connecting an external HDD for editing (USB is not nearly as stable as FW for editing) you'd be much better off finding a deal on a 15" inch MacBook Pro, either unibody or the previous generation.

I have FCS running on a current MacMini and it's doing fine. Granted this isn't a heavy lifting system but It certainly can edit. The Mini has Firewire though.

You can not run Final Cut Pro on a Mac book, It says right on the apple site. And if you could pro res renders would be horrendous.
I run the older Final Cut Pro on my power book, but a friend of mine bought a mac book just to find it wouldn't run FCS 2. Did they change this with studio 3?

Actually I found a local 17" Macbook Pro for the same price that already has Final Cut Studio 2 (FCP 6) already installed. Checking it out tonight!
