Thanks for this Chris I was looking for these specific specs on this cam. :) What's your take on this version still only using 1/3 sensor?

I think they're planning to make an "XL F" version of this camcorder with
interchangeable lenses, and they wanted to insure backward compatibility
with the existing XL series HD lenses. That's my take on it.

I think you mentioned that before Chris really early on, and while you're probably right, Canon did bin the VL lens mount that was on the EX Hi8 camera (happy memories!)

I don't know if they have completely sold me. Sony's new NXCAM can go up to 1.5 lux in low light, this one goes to 4.5. And the new NXCAM has a SDI jack and timecode without having to buy another model. just my thoughts.

lens, in the UK and Europe it was known as the EX1Hi and here in the States we had
it as the L1 (and later the L2, LX100 and LX200). I used to shoot with an L1 back in
the day. *sigh*

Now *that* was a 1/2-inch sensor!

With 380,000 effective pixels to boot (440,000 on the PAL model EX1Hi)!

The EXHi was a really great camera wasn't it Chris. I would actually put THAT into the revolutionary category. It the ONLY affordable interchangeable lens camcorder at the time and a massive hit with amateur wildlife cameramen.

Just wanted to point out that the XF300 goes to 4.5 lux in Full AUTO mode when shooting 60i (Shutter speed 1/60, Gain +21dB). In manual mode: 0.08 lux (Shutter speed 1/4, Gain +33dB)

It would be better if camera manufacturer could somehow create a standard for sensitivity. It wouldn't be too hard. For example 50i/60i (depending on PAL/NTSC country), fully open iris, no gain, 50IRE/90IRE/xxIRE and then measure the number of LUX. Who is interrested in shooting 1/4s with +33dB Gain? Souch settings are more or less unusable, at least for me.
