That was 3 minutes of my life I will never get back.

David, is this about sound design or your feelings?

Now iv heard it i may as well ask....why is it called independence day? and what exactly was the experiment? it kinda just sounds like you've raided your sound track pro bin.

If the experiment was to build the audio in post then your missing the ambience, daily life is more than just singular sounds at pre set times you need room noise and maybe some street sounds. Theres also what sounds the audience expects to hear, how often do you hear cats making that sound in real life? unless your filming two cats fighting to explane the sound it just draws attention to the fact that its a sound effect. sound design has to sound natural.

sorry Alex didn't mean to offend, your asking that age old question do i record on set or adr in post, both have there vices and draw backs, if you record on set and the audio is good it reduces the post effort considerably, you can then run it through the noise print in soundtrack pro and add some extra effects. If you do a whole adr and foley thing its a lot of work but your audio is crisp and you can manipulate the indavidual sounds.

Of course how you do it is directly related to a number of variables like time, access to the location and what type of film you are trying to make. Personally if i was shooting a short or a feature id primarally opt for adr and foley because im a bit of a control freak in that respect however if i was shooting a documentary or corporate film id record on set because obviously you wont have the option of adr.

best bit of advice is to record on set whenever possible and at the very least use it as a guide for building the sound should you need to.

Buba, FCP voice over tool, two of my colleagues, Rod mic., audio library.
There is a room tone and street sound there, but levels are too low, I may boost it up a little bit.
