View Full Version : 5D Firmware Download Party in NYC
Andy Shipsides March 3rd, 2010, 04:22 PM AbelCineTech and Canon are throwing a 5D firmware download party on March 16th. We will be preforming free firmware upgrades all day, and showing off new HDSLR gear. In the evening there will be a presentation from Canon and Abel. All are welcome to attend and have their firmware upgraded. You can always upgrade the firmware yourselves, but it's a good reason to get together. Everyone is welcome.
The party will be at AbelCineTech in NYC. Stay Tuned for more information on the event.
Also I'm looking for footage to show at the event, so please PM me with links to your 5D work.

Heath Vinyard March 4th, 2010, 05:24 PM I guess this gives us a date for the download being available. :)
Andree Markefors March 5th, 2010, 01:34 AM Are you guys planning an "up-all-nighter"?
Canon says download is available from March 17.
Or do you get a pre-release? =)
Chris Li March 5th, 2010, 10:15 AM Will you be serving green beer at the Abel Party? I'll be so there!

Andy Shipsides March 6th, 2010, 08:55 AM Canon will be there preforming upgrades. I'll look into some St. Patty's day style refreshments.
Andy Shipsides March 11th, 2010, 08:36 PM Small update! Because of overwhelming demand we are having two presentations that night. One at 6pm and one at 7:30. Jon Fauer, ASC and editor of Film & Digital Times will be presenting.
Hope to see you there.
Andy Shipsides March 12th, 2010, 07:45 PM Another Update.
Illya from HotRod camera will be coming in to show off his new modified 7D with a PL mount. We will be taking orders for these at the event.

Thomas Barclay March 14th, 2010, 12:26 PM I won't be able to attend the event. Could someone do all the FCP users a favor? Find one of the Canon reps. Back them into a corner and ask about the release about the EOS plugin they mentioned for FCP. I know this isn't as cool as the new 24p firmware upgrade but I'm real curious to see what this bad boy will offer. It makes sense that they would offer it after the firmware upgrade since people might not be that interested to use it if they still wanted to conform the clips to 24p.
Jim Giberti March 14th, 2010, 01:22 PM Hey Thomas, you can see exactly what it's all about right here.
Canon Digital Learning Center - Introducing EOS Movie Plugin-E1 for Final Cut Pro (http://www.usa.canon.com/dlc/controller?act=GetArticleAct&articleID=3249)
It's actually going to be in the same league as the firmware update as far as our workflow is concerned. The real potential of CF acquisition is just that until this is released. The ability to capture just what you need from a clip, especially when you're producing long format work, and skipping the second round of Pro Res transcoding will simply make post exceedingly faster...not to mention the potential of 3x faster transcoding.
I'm betting they put it up with the new firmware, but that's just a guess.
Ben Denham March 14th, 2010, 10:26 PM Yes this looks like a major workflow improvement. I would love to see something similar for Premiere Pro.
Thomas Barclay March 15th, 2010, 01:47 PM Hey Jim, thanks for the link. I haven't seen this info yet. However, this still leaves me wondering about the release. The article says early March. With today being the 15th, this has us heading into late March. I hope you are right. A simultaneous launch would be awesome.
Jim Giberti March 15th, 2010, 06:47 PM By the way Thomas, I may be wrong but it doesn't look like the new plugin includes EXIF info in the logging process (only user defined metadata). In case you weren't aware and as a general FYI, you can get the basic EXIF info for any clip - focal length, shutter speed and aperture - by changing the clip's .THM file extension to .jpg and then right clicking the file and doing a "Get Info".
Nigel Barker March 16th, 2010, 01:10 AM By the way Thomas, I may be wrong but it doesn't look like the new plugin includes EXIF info in the logging process (only user defined metadata). That will be a pity if true as that feature was part of the original announcement by Glue Tools of this plugin before it was bought out by Canon.
View EXIF data of each Canon DSLR clip
Once the GlueTools plug-in is installed, a new menu item will be available in Final Cut Pro’s Tools menu. By selecting a clip in Final Cut Pro, one can select the Tools > Canon EXIF Data menu item and see the EXIF data that was ingested with the shot. EXIF information associated with the footage, such as the Exposure, Shutter Speed, etc, will all be available.

Roibeard MacEasmainn March 17th, 2010, 02:54 AM Just wondered if the Canon guys at the firmware update event had anything to say about the likely availability date for the EOS E1 FCP plug-in? The Canon USA website is still showing 'Early March'.
Michael Wisniewski March 17th, 2010, 06:15 AM ... I may be wrong but it doesn't look like the new plugin includes EXIF info in the logging process (only user defined metadata) ...Per this Canon presentation on the EOS Plug-In (http://www.macvideo.tv/camera-technology/features/index.cfm?articleId=3212208), EXIF data & timecode are saved when transcoded via Log & Transfer.
Jim Giberti March 17th, 2010, 11:01 AM Thanks so much for posting that Michael. I'm surprised that Canon didn't highlight the EXIF info as a feature in the overview on their site, but I'm really glad to be wrong.
I'll tell you what's another cool feature from that video that's not on the Canon site - the ability to burn DMG files directly to disc. Management/storage is one of the things that's still a bit of an evolution with the tapeless approach. There's something to be said about shooting 8GB cards so that you can just drag a DMG copy to a DVD and burn it in the background while ingesting just what you need in the Log and Transfer process.
Very nice development.
