...While the EX3 will output general display info to an external monitor, the one thing that it won't display on the monitor out is framing markers. Very annoying since I had to frame for 4:3 the other day, and couldn't view the EX3 viewfinder.

If it makes you feel any better, neither can the PDW-700.
But the F800 can.

All my field and studio monitors have both safe and aspect ratio markers built in. I can turn them on or off and customize the safe areas on most evaluation monitors. This is true of my Sony, JVC and Marshall monitors. So it does not make sence for the camera to send this in its monitor signal.

I've seen very high end film productions shooting with the DP viewing via a 4:3 monitor with bits of card taped onto it!

Bit's of card, chinagraph pencil, what's wrong with that? If it works why fix it! Seriously... I don't know what makes it so hard to output the safe area markers, or peaking for that matter. Oh well... where did my chinagraph go...

Or using 3M Scotch Magic Tape. You can see through semi-transparent tape but not cardboard or card stock.

It does in my case, which was while using the Glidecam. Some of the lower budget monitors supplied with Steadicams don't have framelines either. Bits of tape are okay I suppose. Might see how removable marker pens do.

How about getting a small sheet of Mylar and making some tape lines or marker lines on it? Then place it on your screen when you need it? Just my $0.02.
