i currently have a p4 3.2 ht processor PC with 3 gig of ram and 512mb graphics card, several years old. and it just is not enough to edit footage shot with an ex3.

would the cheapest macbook pro work to edit this footage?

Yes a MacBook Pro with FCP will cope quite happily with XDCAM material. I used to use an old plain vanilla white MacBook to edit XDCAM.

This will work fine, no problem at all.
