A very good plan and one I'm sure others will follow!
View Full Version : New: Canon Rebel T2i Digital SLR Andy Wilkinson February 23rd, 2010, 10:21 AM A very good plan and one I'm sure others will follow! Konrad Haskins February 23rd, 2010, 11:10 AM For me the T2i will get the job done until something better comes along. It's cheaper and has zero light loss compared to a quality 35mm adapter. As Chris has pointed out it does not replace a small sensor camcorder for those of use who do not always want shallow DOF. It's a very nice tool to have in you bag, especially for those of us who own Canon L glass. As a happy 30D owner (for stills) I know that change will be very rapid. Who knows what the 60D will be??? Aaron Fowler February 23rd, 2010, 05:24 PM I plan on getting a 550D (T2i) as a backup/B-cam for my EX1. It's compact, light and cheap. Although there's no way I'm giving up my EX1 I'm sure there will be times when the 550D will be advantageous over the EX1 (such as in tight spaces, discrete shooting or in low light). Also, it means if I want to do something quick or just a personal video, I don't have to carry around my chunkier EX1 kit (although I'm sure it's not as big as Andy's EX3 kit! :P). Bryan McCullough February 23rd, 2010, 05:40 PM I'm 100% sold on this camera, looks fantastic for the price. Was going to pick up a 7D but can now put the difference into a rack/mount. My sister is a photographer and has a ton of lenses, will be fun. Will be a neat compliment to my Z7U. I'm ready for the release...... David St. Juskow February 23rd, 2010, 06:17 PM I'm also pretty much sold on it. This is what I was waiting for- if the focus is still wonky (i.e. no good way to focus) at least i'm spending 800 bucks on something that 99% of the time is going to look just as good as the 5D. For fine art still photography, I've got my old 35 film cameras, which still can't be beat. For quick digital shots, the rebel works great. And for video, which is the real reason to get this, can anyone really say the 5D is a better purchase? That's not a rhetorical question. The full frame sensor is no big advantage for HD video, the body is better built, sure, but... Chris Barcellos February 23rd, 2010, 06:53 PM Well, the benefit of the 5D falls is in sensor size, and attendant depth of field decrease for those looking for that. It is actually shallower than a 35mm cinema film camera which the T2i will approximate better. Also, in the 5D, you have wider access to faster lenses, including fast 50 mm Nikons to adapt on for a song off the internet. Sure you can do the same with the T2i ( I assume adapters will work with them too) But your normal 50 mm, will become a short tele, and getting a fast (1.4 or faster) normal will cost a lot more. In addition, I don't think there is any dispute that the 5D is a bit better in low light situations (producing less noise), given its sensor size. Despite that, I will be grabbing one the T2i's to compliment my 5D. For non professional film making enthusiast this is a great opportunity, Canon bringing another major coup to this crazy film making market on a level similar to the HV20 when it came out. Jon Fairhurst February 23rd, 2010, 06:55 PM Is the 5D2 the better purchase for video? On the "yes" side: * Full frame is better suited to fast primes. * It's got slightly better noise rejection. * You can run Magic Lantern to fix the audio gain, provide zebras, etc. On the "no" side: * It costs much more. * If you shoot sports or wildlife, a crop sensor gives more reach. * It still doesn't run 24/25p. It should soon. :) * We're not sure if the new firmware will offer 720p50/60 or HD out from the HDMI port when recording. * Did I mention the cost? ;) Robert Turchick February 23rd, 2010, 07:20 PM my wish list is built at BH...just need to hit the "move to cart" button when that shows up! Same plan here, keeping the video camera and this will be a backup/specialty shot plus will teach me about lenses and photography which can only make me better in the long run! Then I can get in to (more likely rent without looking like an idiot!) more serious equipment! Bryan McCullough February 23rd, 2010, 07:22 PM I've not looked into rigs for DSLRs yet, searching through threads here. Anyone have one they're planning to use with the T2i? Aaron Fowler February 23rd, 2010, 08:04 PM On the "no" side: * It costs much more. I wouldn't pay almost 3 times the amount of the 500D/T2i for something that does a similar job. That's just me personally and I couldn't justify buying the 5D mkII (or even the 7D) when I already have a video camera and don't need the benefits of a full frame sensor. I think Canon's done a great job with the 550D/T2i's position in the market... I'd wager that for people like us wanting a video camera (as opposed to a stills camera) that they'd sell 3 times the units than the twice-the-price 7D. The price point applies to people like me who otherwise wouldn't be in the market for a camera and I've seen some talk in this thread of buying two with the money that you'd be spending on the 7D. The 5D mkII still has a place in the video market but I'm a little bit scared for the 7D. Kin Lau February 23rd, 2010, 09:56 PM The 7D would still fly off the shelves w/o video, as would the 5Dm2, 1Dm4 etc. Most of users at this level will not be buying it for video. The still photography market here is probably 100x larger. Kevin Lee Yuen February 23rd, 2010, 10:13 PM any idea on a release date yet? Its in stock at BH and JR Darrick Vanderwier February 23rd, 2010, 10:13 PM The one upside the 7D has is the better build and weatherproofing on a whole... Some would still buy it rightly so in my opinion for the feel and quality aspects. The price isn't really all that bad its just that now you get the same image quality for a lot less... There will still be a video market for the 7D. Bryan McCullough February 23rd, 2010, 10:14 PM Wow! Just happened! Bryan McCullough February 23rd, 2010, 10:18 PM Its in stock at BH and JR Order placed at B&H! Says it'll be here by Friday! Bryan McCullough February 23rd, 2010, 10:23 PM The body only, yes. The one with the 18-55 lens is available (that's what I just ordered). Canon | EOS Rebel T2i Digital SLR Kit w/ EF-S/18-55 IS Darrick Vanderwier February 23rd, 2010, 10:23 PM Canon | Canon EOS Rebel T2i Digital SLR (Body Only) | 4462B001 not in stock yet... just listed for sale... Aaron Fowler February 23rd, 2010, 10:28 PM The 7D would still fly off the shelves w/o video, as would the 5Dm2, 1Dm4 etc. Most of users at this level will not be buying it for video. The still photography market here is probably 100x larger. Sorry, I meant that comment in terms of market share of pro video and not stills (although I'm quite aware that it's a stills camera first and video camera second). Its in stock at BH and JR Horray! So has anyone left for the store yet? :P Robert Turchick February 23rd, 2010, 10:47 PM wooooohoooooo! resisted the urge to do overnight shipping...will get mine next Tuesday! Jad Meouchy February 24th, 2010, 01:48 AM just ordered one also, should arrive by monday. if it's even 75% of what the 7D is, I'll be extremely happy Tony Davies-Patrick February 24th, 2010, 06:00 AM Already selling here in UK; although the build quality and 'feel' are a bit cheap and plasticky in my opinion, plus fps and seals etc doesn't of course match the more expensive 7D. The 7D is still a far better buy if it's going to be your main camera, or you intend to use it for a lot of outdoor work. Michael Liebergot February 24th, 2010, 09:59 AM Well couldn't resist, bought the kit last night with the 18-55mm kit lens, a few Delkin (class 6) SD cards and a 50mm 1.8 prime. More lenses to come (Tamron 17-50, Sigma 30mm 1.4), but looking forward to getting it by this Friday. Ned Soltz February 24th, 2010, 10:20 AM I'm trying very hard to resist... Will be 6 blocks away from B&H this afternoon..... Prashanna Jayaseelan February 24th, 2010, 10:20 AM Canon 550D / Rebel T2i test - "FEBRUARY" preview (pre-production model) on Vimeo Michael Liebergot February 24th, 2010, 10:44 AM I'm trying very hard to resist... Will be 6 blocks away from B&H this afternoon..... Ned enjoy the snow. =( Don't know what kind of shape B&H will be in after today with 2 feet of snow coming. Robert Turchick February 24th, 2010, 10:52 AM Snow be damned! as long as my camera makes it out the door! HaHa! Wonder how many T2i's they sold in the first couple of hours of availability? Seems like this has been a VERY hot item of discussion here and several other large forums! Ned Soltz February 24th, 2010, 11:03 AM Ned enjoy the snow. =( Don't know what kind of shape B&H will be in after today with 2 feet of snow coming. Lucky that my shoot is in the city today rather than tomorrow. Just drizzle right now for the rest of the day. We will all be very interested in knowing your assessment of camera once you've received it. Ned J. Chris Moore February 24th, 2010, 11:25 AM Hey guys, I am thinking about ordering one and having it shipped here in time to do a gig saturday. Not to turn this into a lens discussion but I need a wide fast prime to use on my Glide Cam rig (dual arm and vest, can't remember the actual name) and for general purpose use. I have about $1,000 to spend on the lens and would like to order it from b & h at the same time as the camera so I only have to pay for shipping once. It doesn't have to be the greatest or even Canon, just something as a good general use until I can save some cash for a good L series. Here is the one I'm looking at: Canon | Wide Angle EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Autofocus Lens | 2510A003 (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=NavBar&A=getItemDetail&Q=&sku=102851&is=USA&si=rev#anchorToReadReviews) Thanks Andy Wilkinson February 24th, 2010, 11:30 AM Is this going to be wide enough for your needs? (with the 550D's 1.6X crop factor) J. Chris Moore February 24th, 2010, 12:00 PM See that's what I really don't know. The only thing wider in a Canon glass is the 20mm f2.8 but I'm concerned how it will preform in low light situation. Maybe a sigma lenses would be a better fit but I don't know about their build quality or performance. Maybe this one: Sigma | Super W/A 20mm f/1.8 EX Aspherical DG DF RF AF | 411101 Prashanna Jayaseelan February 24th, 2010, 12:08 PM I would go for this lens on a glidecam - adds more weight also. Canon | EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Zoom Lens | 1242B002AA | B&H Kin Lau February 24th, 2010, 12:30 PM Hey guys, I am thinking about ordering one and having it shipped here in time to do a gig saturday. I use the Sigma 30/1.4, and DOF is razor thin. Will you have enough time to figure it all out? For $1000-, you could get both the Sigma 30/1.4 and 20/1.8. Andy Wilkinson February 24th, 2010, 01:08 PM There is some really good info in this thread - and dotted around in the Stabiliser Section. Might I suggest we maybe continue the discussion over there - rather than hijack this thread? http://www.dvinfo.net/forum/canon-eos-7d-hd/472716-7d-steadicam.html J. Chris Moore February 24th, 2010, 01:51 PM Thanks for the link to the other thread. Sorry about the hijack, I'll continue this over there. The mod is welcome to move these post there too. Thanks for all the quick replies too! This forum is great! J. Chris Moore February 24th, 2010, 02:08 PM B & H is now showing the t2i as temporarily out of stock now. Guess they sold out this morning. Dang it! Oh well, guess I'll have to wait now. Michael Simons February 24th, 2010, 04:26 PM After reading all these posts, I put my order in at Brick Photo Center. They are getting it tomorrow. I will use the TR7 or whatever it's called as a backup to my 7D. Aaron Fowler February 24th, 2010, 05:54 PM There will be a specific section for it once it starts shipping. Chris, can we have that section now please? :P I'm sure you're on top of it, but this thread is getting a bit long and it's going to be hard to tell the speculation apart from the facts soon... And I know you don't like starting empty forums... So here's some threads I found: http://www.dvinfo.net/forum/photo-hd-video-d-slr-others/473506-just-picked-up-550d.html http://www.dvinfo.net/forum/photo-hd-video-d-slr-others/472698-advice-t2i-needed.html http://www.dvinfo.net/forum/canon-eos-7d-hd/473514-functions-t2i-vs-7d-im-talking-actual-buttons.html http://www.dvinfo.net/forum/canon-eos-7d-hd/473474-quick-played-around-eos-550d-last-week.html Don't mean to be pushy... Just trying to help. Erik Andersen February 24th, 2010, 06:45 PM Just placed my T2i Kit order with Adorama, only to be told after the fact via e-mail it was out of stock. Not cool. Moments later, B&H has it in stock. Order placed, camera arrives Wednesday - B&H FTW! The samples so far have been helpful, but not conclusive as to video quality. Unless someone beats me to it, I'll post raw files with full lens and ISO/aperture/shutter info for people to sink there teeth into. There will be stair-stepping for sure, though the samples so far have avoided showing much. A great thing I noticed in James Miller's video was the SD crop mode. No rolling shutter on the quick pans! I guess that's to be expected given that fewer lines are being sampled, but it was amazing to see. Ken Diewert February 24th, 2010, 06:56 PM Erik, Looking forward to seeing some samples - can you challenge this thing in super low light as well. Also, what is the cost in CDN by the time you get it it here through customs. Thank in advance. Roger Shealy February 24th, 2010, 10:43 PM Mine comes in tomorrow and ordered a Tamron VC 17-55 separately along with NeoScene to go with Vegas 9 to help with the HD workflow. I'm looking forward to see how it compares to the 7D. I think the T2i will be perfect for the quick pieces we work on at my employer to document and communicate projects. We've been using an old HC7 and SureShot S3 for quick work and hiring an A1 or using my 7D for more serious work. Now we will hopefully have a good cam for both stills and video. J. Chris Moore February 24th, 2010, 11:10 PM Just ordered mine from B&H next day air. Should have it by Friday. I went ahead and ordered a Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM. Hopefully this combo will produce some pretty sweet results for me. I partner with a photography studio that shoot Nikon, so I'll definitely be picking up a Nikon adapter to take advantage of some of their lenses as well. I'll post some results when I get a chance. Scott Brickert February 25th, 2010, 01:32 AM Just ordered one from B&H, arriving next Friday. :) Jenn Kramer February 25th, 2010, 03:54 AM I went ahead and created a separate thread for production sample files: http://www.dvinfo.net/forum/digital-video-industry-news/473566-canon-eos-rebel-t2i-550d-production-model-hd-samples.html Many thanks to James Miller for providing the first. If you have a T2i we could still use a couple more samples. Daylight, low iso, fast movement, some examples of the rolling shutter, etc. Chris Hurd February 25th, 2010, 09:26 AM Chris, can we have that section now please? :P I'm sure you're on top of it, but this thread is getting a bit long and it's going to be hard to tell the speculation apart from the facts soon... Done. Here's the new forum: http://www.dvinfo.net/forum/canon-eos-rebel-t2i-eos-550d-hd/ Thanks Aaron, |
