I've had success using my MRC1 recorder (Transcend 16GB cards worked flawlessly) with my Sony HVR-V1U, but I'm not able to find "AVI" as a recording format in the recorder menu. I've captured M2T files and "DV" files ... but I really want AVI. COuld someone please walk me thru the menu steps, and let me know if a camera setting is possibly causing this?

I normally shoot HDV 1080i 16:9 to tape. 99.9% of my work output is standard def, so I end up downconverting from the camera or when rendering the project file. The whole reason I bought the MRC1 was to put standard def AVI files right into my computer without the wait for tape. Any help is appreciated!

Menu > Setting > DV File Type > AVI.

Page 8. Make sure your cam is outputting DV and not HDV.

Thanks Adam - so just to clarify, can I still shoot to tape in HDV and use iLink downconversion to output a standard def image to the MRC1, or do I have to put the camera into DV mode for both tape and MRC1 files?

I think i.LINK CONV is the way to go. That way should give you HDV on tape and DV on card.
