View Full Version : Do I need to do an AF Microadjustment with my new 50mm f/1.2L lens ?
Bernard Rosenzweig February 2nd, 2010, 09:28 PM I just got my new Canon 50mm f/1.2L lens, and after taking some picture with 1.2 aperture the main subject is clearly OUT OF FOCUS, I think the main reason is that at 1.2 the DOF is super shallow.
I was reading that the Canon 7D has the Custom Function to do a AF Micro adjustment to the Lens, do I have to do it ?, or I should send the lens back to Canon for proper calibration ?, what are my options ?, thanks a lot
Jason McDonald February 2nd, 2010, 10:36 PM I would need to see the picture you're speaking of, but at f1.2 you're not going to get a face in focus (If you're doing the a portrait). Trying opening it up to 7-8ish and see if your subject is more in focus.
Bernard Rosenzweig February 2nd, 2010, 10:43 PM I am focusing on the letter "H" in the keyboard, as you can see the row on top is in focus, please check the attached photos
Jason McDonald February 2nd, 2010, 11:18 PM The equation (Math) is too difficult to explain, but when you begin to stop down the focus goes a little forward (Towards the camera) and little bit and then some backwards. I think your lens is fine.
Benjamin Eckstein February 3rd, 2010, 02:39 PM I had to do the microadjustment for one of my lenses and there are good instructions online on how to do it with Live View and a focus chart. The pictures though don't look that off. Maybe back focusing a tiny bit, but the focus point at that angle may have picked up the edge of the key instead of the H. What AF setting are you using?
Markus Nord February 4th, 2010, 05:03 AM did you take the picture handheld? Then it's really easy to just get a small movment forward (just 1 mm is enough) and the focus will be "of".
Bernard Rosenzweig February 6th, 2010, 05:46 PM Here are the results from the Micro adjustments to my Canon 50mm f/1.2L Lens at an Aperture of 1.2, I really do not see a huge difference and I would say at 0 Micro Adjustment the photo looks perfectly fine, what do you think ?, the Micro Adjustment sequence of the photos is the following, also the photo name has the value for the Micro Adjustment in the name:
0 +15
+5 -5
-15
Bernard Rosenzweig February 7th, 2010, 12:05 AM Micro Adjustment = 0
Bernard Rosenzweig February 7th, 2010, 12:07 AM Micro Adjustment = +15
Bernard Rosenzweig February 7th, 2010, 12:08 AM Micro Adjustment = -15
