First could someone tell me how to save a frame on the timeline as a picture? I want to save a couple for the cover on my dvd but can not get this one figured out. Second is there a simple way to adjust the audio peaks without lowering the sound of the rest of the video. Thanks in advance.

Just above the preview, at the far right is a floppydisc icon (save snapshot to file)

The simple answer is a volume envelope. The next simplest is normalisation/compression, setting your maximum peak to a lower level (this may take some trial and error to get right if you're not familiar with the process). If you also have Soundforge, you have more options available.

Make sure to set your Preview window to Best/Full before you take the snapshot as this will give the highest resolution image.
I prefer to save it in PNG format (lossless) in case I do any further editing of the image in Photoshop.

Taken one step farther, deinterlacing will also increase the quality. The various scripts that are available to do this task will change the preview to best/full and set the deinterlacing properly, save the image, and then set them all back to their previous values.

for audio I'd use "Wave Hammer Surround" from audio event FX
