Are you connected via Composite or Component?

If you're connected Composite, make sure you didn't accidentally connect to the Y connector of the Component input.

If you're connected Component, make sure you didn't mix up/reverse the R-Y and B-Y connections.

I am connected to the deck via s video and jumping the reference.

The wires in S-Video cable are 28 gauge or thinner. If the Colour signal wire broke, that would do it for sure. Have you tried a different cable?

And where are you jumping Reference from? Monitor out? Very badly timed video would do it as well. Have you tried pulling Reference altogether?

Are you sure your monitor output is setup correctly and that the problem is with the recording?

Yeah, S-Video cables do a Y/C separation (luminance and chrominance) and pass the signals discretely. If the chroma wire (again VERY thin wire gauge) gets damaged (which is easy to do from "yanking" cables) then voila! B&W video circa 1950!

Glad that worked out for you.
