Hello,

I am fairly new to the the world of 5D, and as a such I am still putting together a basic kit. One part of this kit is the Fader ND (Ebay one). I currently have the 24 - 105 F4 L (77mm filter thread) kit lens and a non L 50mm 1.8 (52mm filter thread). I want to buy a size of filter that is going to be able to be used on my current and all future lenses. My questions are as follows:

1) Are there many lenses that take the largest filter thread of 82mm?

2) Would I be able to use step down rings to accommodate the 77mm filter down to the 52mm of the 50mm 1.8 lens?

3) If I can use step down rings, is there any optical loss?

4) Are there any particular make of step down rings that people have used and are pleased with?

Many Thanks in advance,

George

Does anyone have the ebay fader ND, and are they happy with it?

I too have got the 5D with the 24-105 lens, and some old Nikon primes.
So, same problem.
I bought two Fader NDs because I couldn't be bothered with stepdown rings and the Fader ND is not expensive.
Stepdown rings seem like one more thing to go wrong or get lost during a shoot.
Have not used the Fader NDs extensively (because I've been shooting a lot in low light) but they seem to work fine.
Boniface at Light Craft Workshop (the supplier) has been efficient and helpful.

I have three of them, couldn't do much with the 5D MKII without them.

Great value and they work well.

I skipped step up and step down rings and just ordered the sizes I needed for each lens.

I have one and it works very well but, you can't use your lens shade with it.

I have actually thought about building a special matte box just for this filter.

Thanks for all the info. I've gone ahead and ordered the 77mm and can't wait to get it!

I have them too and think they're great especially for the money. I also didn't bother with step rings, I got a 77mm for my 24-70 and 70-200, and a 58 for my 85mm lens. Just ordered a 52mm dia one and had to order another 77mm one because I found out they're don't take kindly to being sat on.

Ouch. What and idiot…

I recently purchased ND Fader with front thread size 86 mm. Allows wide angle zooms to function with out excessive clipping of the image frame.

Down side of this, an 86 mm lens hood is hard to come by, at a sane price. I settled on WA metal version. It's OK.

Two stupid noob questions here:

1) How do I figure out what MM filter I need?

2) Can someone supply an actual link on where to purchase there? I'd love to compare the eBay version, and maybe something at B&H I could actually return if needed.

Thank you!
