Hi to all, and thanks for your help!

My vx2000 has a very annoying zoom motor hum that is recorded when a fast zoom in or out is initiated. Sony is trying to tell me this is normal...I can't believe that! Has anyone else experienced this problem? I've been advised to try to compare it to other vx2000s but am having a hard time locating any locally. I realize that the on board mic is not the best audio solution but my primary use is sporting events and less is better.

My PD-150 has it on fast zoom. I think it is very likely normal given the fast zoom speed.

Mike-what about tape transport noise? I get a high pitch whining noise.

Lou,

Do you get this noise on your VX2000 ?
I notice a 15217 Hz spike on my spectrum analyzer
in SoundForge, but I can't hear it. It may be
responsible for the annoying ear feeling I get
when listening to my miniDV tapes live.

As for camera whine, I've noticed some stuff
at 150, 220, 300 Hz. They're not harmonics.
They're usually pretty low level, but when I
hear them, I notch them out with a parametric
EQ.

The zoom motor and drum whine are normal for both cameras. That's why the NR menu setting is available.

I find that a more directional microphone and moving the camera further away, even off-camera, works best.

I know there's no end to what you can spend once you get started, but two purchases I've made have really proven themselves to me lately. One is the miniRover, an "L" shaped support with a hot shoe on the post. The bracket itself greatly improves hand-held shot stability and the post allows me to mount my new Azden SGM-X shotgun mic away from the camera body.

Yes-it was the lower head drum assembly. SONY replaced the unit under my extended warranty. I beleive it was 249 dollars.

The camera is as quite as a church mouse.

AND YES-you can take it out with SoundForge.
