I might have saved it if I had opened it up right away, but it wasn't until a week later that I tried to use it.

Yipes! One thing to note. If you do notice a spill and it's mostly water, it might come back to life if you let it completely dry out before you apply power to it. The sugar and milk in your tea might have rung down the curtain anyway.
