Geez! My 7D just arrived, but I guess I have to wait for the battery to charge before I can play with it. I hate that.

That's two of us. The camera arrived from B&H today at 4:00p.m. I know one is supposed to wait until the battery is fully charged, but I couldn't stand the suspense. It had enough of a charge to check it out and do a partial set-up, but no chance to do any shooting.

and I charged my 2 batt from my 40D :)

The 40D and the 7D have different batteries with different connections. I had mine charged too... dang it.

Willard, I did the same thing. Gave it 30-minutes to charge - the chrger was just starting to double blink, indicating a 50% charge. The camera however, indicated a higher charge level.

Got my first handful of shots and even some video. Can't wait to view it.

Does anybody know if the 7D batt is specific for this camera or there is other canon cameras that use it.
Just wander if i could findc it local instead of having B&H mail it to me.

The 7D uses the same battery as the 5Dm2.

I ordered some 3rd party batteries before the 7D hit the stores, so that when I picked it up, I already had a couple of charged batteries. :)

Kin is right about the 3rd party batteries. There's two more caveats, these don't have the embedded chip so your camera can't read the charge level on the 3rd party batts. Second, you need to use the charger that came with the 3rd party battery.

Canon adopted this stretegy to embed a chip into their battery. So if you are not using their brand of battery, the camera will report with a message and it won't show the remaining battery level. If you can get over that, you can save a lot using third party batteries. LP-E6 Li-Ion Battery for Canon 5D Mark II and 7D | L.A. Color Shop (http://lacolorshop.com/products/item.asp?id=lpe6)

Do I need a new charger as well?
or the 40D charger will do the job?
