Okay - sorry if this has been covered in this thread already (didn't read the whole thing) but does this filter absolutely need to be put directly on the camera, or can it be used/be effective, on a lens attached to my 35mm adapter?

anywhere in the optical chain Trevor. Its just an ordinary dye filter.

Trevor Meeks
November 20th, 2009, 03:07 AM
okay - wasn't sure since I haven't used a filter like this.

interesting... I may not mind picking up 3 of these to use on my three lenses... they'd just need step up rings since unfortunately they aren't offered in varying sizes... too bad they don't have a T1 IR that works in a mattebox!

The Tiffen T1 white paper says that the filter is available as 4x4, 4x5.65 and 6.6x6.6, though I guess they are flat out to meet the demand for 77mm at the moment.

ahhhh... haven't seen the whitepaper. i guess i should try tiffen directly and see what the deal is or where to get a 4x5.65... thanks Nick!

[Apologies if this shouldn't be posted - as far as I can tell, there are no UK sponsors at present]

Just spoke to Top Teks in the UK and they have had their first 4 T1 filters come in, and go straight out. More are on order. They are quoting £60 plus £6 postage plus VAT and will put your name down against future stock.

N

I ordered this from Top Teks about two weeks ago, it is being delivered today. Put your name on their pre-order list, they will ring you when it becomes available.

Just as I finished posting my previous reply, the courier delivered my Tiffen filter from Top Teks. It is the slim version with only the lens thread, but that is no problem as I do not intend to use extra filters.

I also received an extra battery BP-U60 from another supplier, I can't get over the price of this £192. In my opinion this is a downright rip-off, but unfortunately I need the battery for my assignment in Africa next month.

Why didn't you get the swit battery ? It's about half the price, same capacity and has a D-tap outlet.

Paul.

From what I have read it is also about twice the size and the lead is for the EX1.

Paul Kellett

No it's not twice the size, just a tiny bit bigger, the EX1 and EX3 swit battery is the same except that the EX3 version has a slightly longer lead.

Hello!

Who can show some footage filmed with the Tiffen T1?

I've had mine on order with Top-Teks for weeks. Got a phone call yesterday telling me they had one with my name on it. Just waiting for it to arrive (next day is always two days to the Isle of Man) plus the boats and flights were cancelled yesterday due to the Force Nine Gale winds and rain, we had :) so thats probably slowed things further.

Hello All,
I have just completed a shoot and used the Tiffen IR filter and my black's on dinner suites are dark and rich and really stand out with the whites of the shirts. I am glad I purchased this filter as the event I have just covered they had black tablecloths. This is the coating that Sony should have included into the camera's ND filters and no one would have a problem.

I can really recommend this Filter it is a must have for EX1/3 owners

Thanks Lance ... I'm still waiting for an email stating mine is on it's way. I have no idea when it will be sent but ASAP is best. I recently shot a jazz performance and invariably the blacks looked brown.

Hi Dean,
A word of caution if you are using a matte box with the 4x4 version do not leave any another filter attached to the camera lens as you will suffer from secondary reflection onto the 4x4.

Just ordered a 4x5.65 T1 IR from Abel Cine - they have 19... er, 18... in stock. Can't wait to finally have this issue resolved!!

Well, my Tiffen T1 IR Filter has just arrived, from Top-Teks! It has a thread front and back. However it fits perfectly under the lens hood. Did a couple of test shots on a shirt I know turned brown/red and it is now a deep rich black, just as you’d see with the naked eye! Brilliant!

Post edited - realized I ordered the wrong filter. Stevie with Abel Cine called me this morning and got it all resolved. Now that's what I call awesome service!

Thanks Stevie (and her informant!) for getting my dumb slip-up taken care of.

Here's my micro-review/footage of the Tiffen T1 IR filter. It contains video of before and after under outdoor overcast conditions.

Tiffen 77mm T1 IR Filter for Sony PMW-EX1 Test on Vimeo

Yay! My subject's nice black suits or dingy black shorts will no longer have a murky brown color! Thanks Tiffen! To best honest though the light loss does stink and I will more than likely take the filter off when shooting in low light. Stage lighting should be OK though.

With these results though, I say, "Sony you owe me $77.20!" I say we all set a date and mail out our bills to them so they get them 'ala the CBS peanut Fiasco.

I'm sure you'll get your refund about the same time I get mine for the $200 Tiffen 486 I bought. ;-)

I shot a stage production before the filter was available, the black costumes all turned brown, had to go back the next day and shoot it all again on my Canon XH A1.

I spoke to Sony UK about this problem, and they were unaware or in denial that there was a problem. In other words the cost of putting this right would be too much. Besides, the increase in red saturation is a feature of this camera, having blacks that turn to brown is an added bonus.

Sony UK are not unaware of the red problem. I reported it to Prime Support as a fault and was sent a pdf of the Tiffen T1 white paper. Sony themselves said that no fix was possible, so Prime Support could not do anything.

Not a peep out of Abel Cine about delivery of the T1 IR filter. I sent two reminders to give me a delivery date and await an answer. I guess my week-wait will be several weeks ... could use this filter ... YESTERDAY !!!

Dean, have you called them? You really should call their NY office and ask for Stevie - she was a huge help with my order. I know you're in tokyo, but SkypeOut is cheap!

Best of luck.

I own the Fuji custom W/ A lens for the EX-3. So far, no plans on making a screw on for that lens. Only 4X5, and my matte box doesn't work on the W/A.

anyone with a Fuji W/A for the EX-3, please contact Tiffen and request they make a screw on for this lens.

Bruce,

Can you confirm this? If the front filter is in fact NOT 77mm, I'm hosed... I mean, I asked TWICE, and then again, when ordering mine from Abel Cine. My problem is that using a matte box most of the time, I was originally thinking about the 4x5.65" version of the T1. This proved to be horribly expensive so I changed my order to the 77mm screw-on, planning to screw my Letus and/or matte box to it... They BOTH require 77mm outer filter thread! I still am waiting for my Order, but now I'm scared that I made a wrong decision.

Andy of Abel - please comment!

Hi Piotr,

I have a Tiffen 77mm T1 IR Filter that has a thread front and back. They both are 77mm and it fits under the original lens hood too!

In the first instance I struggled to screw in another filter but once I had it goes in and out with ease. I now have my matte box adaptor ring on it.

Vincent Oliver

From what I can gather, there are two versions available, a slim filter and a normal size. I have the slim version without a front thread, no problem I do not have a Letus or Matt Box either and would not require extra filter in front of the T1 filter.

You can adapt an existing double threaded filter and drop in the Tiffen filter, I think Steve Shovlar did this.

I posted these questions in another thread by mistake, so please excuse the wasted bandwidth:

I'm still planning to get a T1 but I have a question for those who have received them already. Are you leaving the filter in place all the time? How much light loss is there with the filter in place? Is there any color shift with this filter (prior to WB'ing)?

Paul Inglis
December 2nd, 2009, 12:12 PM
Hi Dave,

To answer your questions;

1. I leave my filter on all the time now
2. There is a 1/3 stop loss
3. Colour shifting – It fixes the far red contamination and everything looks good

Ed Kukla
December 2nd, 2009, 12:15 PM
My T-1 77mm filter screws onto the front of the standard lens and has clearance for the stock lens hood.

There are threads on the outside of the filter to accomodate my 77mm to series 9 adapter ring that I use to mount my matte box.

Everything works fine.

I plan on leaving my T-1 on all the time. That way everything will match all the time and no getting caught without the filter on at the wrong time.

Now I have to figure out hwat to do with my Fuji W/A lens.
