How do I obtain a free "pro" subscription to DV Magazine and Videographer Mag?

Anyone know the web site for Videographer Mag?

Searched google and couldn't find it.

TIA.

What magazines/newletters do you consider as great reading material?

I try to read American Cinematographer, SHOOT magazine, DV Magazine and Cinefex (for in depth efx stuff).

What do you read as inspiration/helpful material?

I try to obtain a range of material for both the video and film world. A lot of video industry material and some hollywood movie stuff. I am particularly interested in material that leans towards independent video/film making.

I don't read any technical industry magazines as I'm leaning away from production and more toward development. So for inspriation I read "Film Comment", the film magazine of the Lincoln Center society. For the other fluffy entertainment I can get more by reading online sources.

Hi folks.

I just picked up two recent Videography and Videomaker magazine but can’t decide which one to subscribe to. What video magazine do you read?

VideoMaker.... isn't that the one which is sort of hobby-oriented? Haven't read it much. I pick up Videography magazine at the newstand from time to time. I think perhaps it's only published quarterly or bi-monthly? My only subscription is to DV magazine.

I try to look at DV, Videography, Moviemaker, and American Cinematographer once a month. I've got a free subscription to the first two from some thing I signed up for on the internet a long time ago.

I hit many of the website forums and happen to recieve Govt. Video in the mail, but don't buy anything from the newsstands. I do buy the SOC mag, as well as Film Comment, Film Quarterly, and a few others, from time to time. Mostly, I read the many books available on cinematography, editing, favorite filmmakers, documentary filmmaking, that sort of thing.

I am looking to get a subscription to one or two industry magazines. What I"m really going for is a magazine that spotlites technology but also has step by step guides on different programs, mainly AE and premiere. Do you guys know of anything out there that fits that bill?

Rob Lohman

Which "industry" are you referring to? Because most "professionals" do not
use Premiere but mainly Avid and FCP for example. It sounds like you are
looking for a semi-pro magazine about video production that covers
production, editing and some effects work?

(If so, I can't answer your question. But hopefully someone else can....)

Broadcast Engineering

Video Systems

These are higher end magazines available free online. I admit I read neither.

I read tons of industry rags per month, but none come even close to visiting forums like this one right here. The rags usually are behind the forums with information - they do have product reviews before most forums because of their availability to get products before market. But, even so...I've found that tech heads usually find out the basic specs on products early and disect things so much that the rags come out and are just verifying everything.

- Videomaker if you're looking for basic video production knowledge.

- Event DV has become a decent rag.

- Studio (used to be Film and Video I think?) - good rag

Those come to mind because they're on my desk!

"Videography" is mostly the press releases from companies latest products, with a couple of good product reviews tossed in. It's free, go to their website and sign up.

DV magazine has some in depth technical articles, Adam Wilt writes for them, and I respect his reviews. It can also be had for free.

VIDEOGRAPHER is pretty basic, prosumer level advice, might be what you're looking for.

I'm just looking for something to fill in the gaps when I'm at home on dialup and the forums load to slow for me to handle.

I don't plan on editing on premiere for very long, so I'm looking for something between prosumer and professional. I will be forced to use Avid HD and Newscutters within a year so I might as well get a feel for them.

Thanks for the responses guy.

Anyone have good industry email lists they get stuff from?

Everything loads slow on dialup.

I have filtered phone lines so my max con speed is 26k with downstream max rates around 2.5kbs. So yeah.

I spend most my day on t3 so in the evenings I'm pretty SOL

Hi guys

Can anyone recommend any industry magazines for good reading on my long daily commute? I've scanned many forums and there seems to be a lot out there. I'd appreciate your feedback as I don't want to waste time or money on magazines that are not respected.

Thanks in advance

It depends a lot on what your focus is. There are probably 30-50 in total.

I like:

EventDV
Videography
DV
STudio
Independent (at store once in a while)

The internet advertising boom seems to be killing off trade magazines. Notice how much less content the current issue of DV has in it?
One of mine even closed it's doors and went all online, but I've already forgotten the name since they are all so similar.

Anyway I get free subscritptions to DV, Videographer, and Studio. All have good original content and all are good for a commute but all have a lot of reprinting of the same press releases. They tend to blur together after awhile

I also pay for American Cinematographer. Pretty snobby but unique and I feel that I actually learn from it. Plus I can make future Netflix picks from it :)

Bill- the one thing that will keep magazines from going completely online, is the fact that you can conveniently roll one up, and take it to the bathroom with you. Sure... you could do the same with a laptop, but would you?

Thanks for the feedback. I have picked up some of these mags at tradehows and, as has been mentioned, a lot of the content seems similar. What really gets me is manufacturers and their resellers writing there own articles, but I suppose free mags have to rely on advertising revenue.

It's really useful all the same to know what the more experienced of you are reading.

Though it does seem a shame.

BTW, I'm really interested in cameras, accessories and editing systems (and trying to get my head around compatiblity issues). And, of course, HD.

Cheers

Dave, if your geared toward narrative stuff at all try:

Moviemaker
Filmmaker
The Independent
RES

RES use to be my favorite but it's gotten less about digital filmmaking nowadays and more about all types of creative media.

There is also a magazine called "VideoMaker". I have a subscription to it and it is alright. Most of it is geared toward product review and stuff like that. But there is also regular articles on tips and techniques on the differenct facets of production. It's an OK magazine. I'd like to see more "how to" type articles though.

I like American Cinematographer. Magazines like DV are fun, but don't really contribute to your artistic growth. If you like product reviews, go for it.

It's not really that type of magazine. The cinematographers do go into detailed explanation as to how they went about things, but it is not layed out in laymen's terms. Still, if you have a base understanding of the craft and the tools involved you can understand it.
There is also Cinefex that deals specifically with special effects and how they achieve them, what type of camera and film, etc, are often included in the equation.
However this was more common before the CGI revolution and now the mag seems mostly about computer/CGI stuff.
I'd highly, HIGHLY recommend going to Ebay and picking up older issues that concentrated on older big effects films like Blade Runner, Alien, etc.
I learned a ton from these magazines and it helped to round out my knowledge of practical/in-camera effects.

"Moviemaker" magazine claims to be the #1 selling independent movie magazine. I bought a copy and it is "very very good". Very informative and very supportive of the indie!!! This magazine is exactly what I've been looking for. Check it out!!!
http://www.moviemaker.com/
MovieMaker Magazine is a quarterly chronicle of the world of independent motion picture art and business and the personalities who inhabit it. It is commentary, how-to information, new product reviews, financing strategies, humor, criticism, photography, illustrations, and candid interviews with above-the-line trendsetters as well as behind-the-scenes craftspeople. Featuring insight into the marquee names of today, the giants of yesterday and the trend-setters of tomorrow in an attractive full-color package, MovieMaker is designed to entertain as well as instruct, and is written for both independent artists and all fans of quality motion pictures.

MovieMaker, "The Art and Business of Making Movies," is the most widely-read independent movie magazine in the world.

I bought the absolute best magazine I've ever seen on Digital video today. It is called "Digital Video techniques" Printed in UK. I bought it at the Barnes and Noble in USA and it was a little expensive but worth it. More how to articles than any other magazine on the subject.

I also have purchased most issues of DVT (they are only on issue 5 anyway) -- mainly because of the included disk of freebies (digital loops, stills and audio loops) and secondly because of the articles, which typically are good.

However, they are biased in their software tutorials towards the "consumer" level: they have never had anything on Vegas, for example, and don't cover Premiere or After Effects (but do cover Elements and Encore).

Steve Witt

Well, like you said.....There has only been five issues so far. The NLE software that you mentioned has entire books written about them that you can check out for free at the Public Libraries (each one is a couple inches thick--lots of info). I'm not at that level yet but maybe they will touch on those bigger NLEs soon. Yes, and the disks with free stuff is cool too!!

Hi All

It might interest you guys to know that Digital Video Techniques now includes a 16 page section called DV Pro that includes tutorials on more advanced DV software like Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro and DVD Studio Pro as well as Encore. No Vegas yet but it will be making an appearance in future issues.

Hey all,

I checked around and it didn't seem like this had been talked about much before.

What industry magazines are out there that don't cost anything? I'd like to get a list / resource going for reference. So I guess I'll start.

Free magazines and publications I receive:

Millimeter
Digital Content Producer
Sound & Video Contractor
Front of House Magazine (audio)

Probably a few others, can't think of them right now.

What do you guys recommend? It doesn't have to "necessarily" be free, but that would be nice.

Thanks
Kit
