Where can I order a few custom audio cables that will be good quality (connectors, cable, and construction), yet not too expensive? Don't tell me to make my own.

Scott Simons is a really good harness maker, and can whip out most any kind of very high end or mid level cable you need done, with a lifetime guarantee.

I use HAVE Inc. in upstate NY. They have a custom shop as well as a very extensive line of standard cables that they assemble to order.

On that note, how are cables actually evaluated/tested, i.e. are there technical specs that I can reference to determine the cost/benefit ratio?

I ask because I'm getting ready to buy a 50ft XLR run for my boom and don't want to be duped by "hype" or duped by low cost (see: cheap and/or sonic inferiority or low longevity)

If your cable provider uses quality cable such as Canare or Mogami (I prefer Canare, myself) then you have no worries. They'll likely use Neutrik connectors, hard to complain about those, too.
Distance for this quality of cable is no issue at all.
