I've been search through the forums but can't find an answer, so please give me a quick hand ;)

I'm shooting a documentary with a Sony PDX-10 PAL this summer, which shoots at 50i. I'm looking at possibly renting a DVX100A as well, and am looking at methods to convert 50i to 24p. I understand that DVFilm maker will convert 50i to 25p, and a ~3% slowdown is then require for 25p to 24p. Is there any software used specifically to do the slowdown, or should just any NLE do it?

i know fcp can do the slow down. just click on the clip, hit apple-j (for us mac users) and then type in 97% in the window that pops up. should be all thats necissary.

I'm not an apple user unfortunately :( Any PC solutions?

Everything I read, on this forum and elsewhere says just convert to 25p, and use that for PAL DVD or broadcast. You only need to go to 24p is you are doing a filmout, in which case the filmout lab will want your 25p footage, and will slow it down for you.

If you want to do it yourself, I believe After Effects will allow you to interpret the 25p footage as 24p, adjust the audio speed, and output 24p.

Joshua is correct.

You do not need any software to "do the slowdown". You simply interpret the footage as 24p, which inherently makes it run around 4% slower on screen. This difference is not noticable. The audio is what needs processing to adjust for the change in pitch as it is played back 4% slower to match - I use SoundForge, but any decent wave editor will do you.

There is also Nattress Standards Conversion for FCP.

I tried out DVFilm Atlantis - it can't convert 50i to 24p as far as I could tell.

Atlantis won't directly convert 50i to 24p, but it will convert 50i to "film-motion" 60i. That's 24p embedded in 60i. You can use DVFilm Maker to then extract the 24p from the 60i. It's a couple of steps, but it will probably get you where you want to be.
