1. I thought $400 was a lot of money.
2. I could watch a movie without trying to figure out where they put the key light.
3. My $99 television seemed just fine.
4. I didn’t know what an S-video cord was.
5. Interlace scan lines didn’t bug me.
6. My living room wasn’t full of empty cardboard boxes (because the shipping label is the receipt, you know?).
7. Pan and scan movies didn’t fill me with rage.
8. I could go somewhere new without wondering if I could steal a shot there.
9. I had no idea that B&H is the coolest, most wonderful place in the world.
10. I thought Monster Cable was really good stuff.

Heh. Ditto.

11. The only thing my computer was good for was running Quicken.

12. Relaxing at home didn't involve discussing the difference between 4:1:1 and 4:2:2 color sampling on a message board with strangers.

13. I thought DV looked great. Now I realize nothing less than uncompressed HD 4:4:4 will suit my projects. :)

Observation on these comments.

It helps, when we're creating something, to understand the difference between the eye of the public, and the initiated eye. By that, I mean those properties that the general public will notice, and appreciate OR denigrate as opposed to those properties that only the initiated will understand , appreciate OR denigrate.

I have been involved in radio, television, theatre and film for all of my life. And one of the problems I often see creeping into the creative process... is the self absorbed creation of "Art for the initiated". It tends to isolate us from the audience we origianlly hoped to reach.

And now my contribution to the list...


19: I was ten pounds lighter and actually had a tan....

21) I didn't spend every waking hour going over new posts at DVInfo.net

22. I could go on vacation/walk the dog/drive my daughter to school (etc.) without dragging along another 10 lbs. of equipment, just in case....

23. I didn't have to decide whether or not I could take my tenor uke and its case on a vacation.
