Looking for a suggestion for a shotgun mic for my GL-2. I film outdoor video- fishing and hunting. Should I consider Azden SGM series and if so should I consider the x, 1x or 2x model? Or should I just get the Canon dm-50? I would like to keep the price under $200 if possible. Any suggestions?

it boils down to your budget, Rick. You can spend light now, and spend heavy later, or you can spend heavy now.
Personally, I'd never consider either the Azden or the Canon. I'd look at an AudioTechnica or a Rode NT series. personally I like the Audio Technica stuff, but for just a little more than your budget, you'll get a lot more mike. I promise you won't be happy with the Azden, and definitely won't be happy with the Canon.
Plan on around 300.00 for a decent starter mic, and you'll be much happier.

i just recieved my Azden sgm2x and i must say that it's not what i wanted from a shotgun mic. When recording at less than 2' it's good, the sound is clear and crispy, but for over 4' distance sound capture it's a deception.


And sound is so important... I think we must invest in something good.

Which Audio Technica shotgun or Rode mic would you suggest?

I bought a Sennheiser MKE300D hoping fora major improvement, but found that it did not have the long range pick-up I wanted for wildlife video.

I ended up spending a lot more money on a sennheiser K6/ME67 combination which is excellent. I mount it in a Beyer EA86 mount fitted to a modified Flash bracket which fits onto a shoe screwed into one of the threaded holes in a Manfrotto sliding plate.

This microphone is very sensitive and does exactly what I want.

Which Audio Technica shotgun or Rode mic would you suggest?

I'm a big fan of the AT 897 Shotgun. It was my first shotgun and is still the most used of my mics...


If it's good enough for SNL it's good enough for me!
