I need inexpensive lighting kit. Is S-V OK? What other bargain brands there? How about 5,600 deg. K lighting?

Smith Victor stuff is pretty bottom level. Their cheapest stuff is not worth getting for free.

I bought one of their "K42-U" kits a few years ago. They now call it their "pro" line. It has 2 600 watt broad lights which are decent and I still use frequently, 2 stands which broke before too much use (plastic collars), and a very sturdy plastic case which is probably the best thing about the kit (and also 2 umbrellas). If you buy SV, buy their better line of stuff.

They were OK for my first set of lights but I would buy at least Lowel lights now if I was looking for something inexpensive.

Instead of a cheap kit, buy two half-way decent lights. At least a lowel omni and a pro and three light stands. Get a larger white umbrella foir your main and a 32" Silver reflector for fill. Use the pro for the background or hairlight. When you have the mone, buy another pro and stand.
