For general use of your VX2100, do you recommend buying the optional Sony microphone that attaches to the camcorder? I don't know the model # for the optional microphone but the mic is usually shown on Sony catalogs.
Or would you use the on board mic?
General use would be record picnic videos, parties, and short clips for presentation.

Well I have used the included mic and I got great sound.
Now audio is big to me, so I would use different mics.
One for direct audio (wireless mic setup)
Or even a shotgun to get small ambient sounds, but until I can get the money
from my vx2100 I'll wait.
By the way how do you like your VX?

A little pricier one, sanheiser.
I had the first one on my XL2. But I sold it along with the rig. Now I've got a 2100 as well, and I reccomend that mic it's very good.

well thank you... I was actually trying to make suggestions... I am however looking for some external lights (not camera mounted ones).
I've heard of the: arri softlight but not sure what else is out there.

Thank you for the recommendation of the mic.
I do not have the VX2100 yet. Unfortunately, I might not be able to pick it up and the version might be discontinued by the time I save up my money.

I use the Rode VideoMic with a fuzzy cover. I also have a fuzzy MicMuff on the stock stereo mic. For general b-roll ambience I really like the built in stereo mic, but whenever someone is talking to the camera, the VideoMic does a great job.

I've got the Sennheiser MKE300 on my VX2100 and I am very pleased with it.

The on-board mic gets ambient sound real well, but the Senn really picks up directly in front of the camera.
