Looks quite good, hope it can really use the new DVDs that hold over 20 GB - but they are expensive.

I've seen several reports of this today. This is a link to the legal firms page http://www.sheller.com/ibmpress.htm a separate page list actions in seven other states http://www.sheller.com/ibmclassaction.htm Visit both pages, there is a questionnaire to fill out etc. If you've had problems with a Deathstar this is your chance.

Yes, I saw this also. Certain models of IBM's Deskstar line have been plagued by troubles. It may be poor luck to write this, but I have two (one of which is the most dreaded 75GXP) and I've had no problems with either. My 120Gb, which is my main media drive on my Mac 1GHz has been top-notch.

So I suppose the next you'll hear from me will be when I'm crying in my beer over my drive crash.

Yup, you've jinked yourself now. Good luck.

I have lost 4, yep count 'em, 4 IBM "Deathstars". Both the main drive and the backup drive twice. Nothing hurts worse than after losing everything on your computer you are told you will not only have to pay to send your drives back but you will have to wait about 6 weeks to get another one in return...twice!
I don't think I would ever be able to buy another drive from IBM. I ended up buying Maxtors to replace the IBM's and when I got the IBM's back I put them in my PC's which I barely use anymore (I use Mac's for video production). I think I have already filled out the forms a few months ago but I haven't heard anything since.

Too bad for IBM, their drives look good on paper but enough is enough. The force aparently wasn't with me and the dark side came and took my stuff away.

What a Nice Looking page . It's a shame that the information is incorrect on so many things.Sort of negates the usefullness of the concept behind the page. Why in the world would someone put up a informative page like that and not be sure they were acurate? Makes no sense at all.

Yup I had one of my 3 60GB deakstar drives fail, took over 4 weeks to get replaced, a friend of mine had 2 and one has been acting up intermittently. I now use only Maxtor and Wetern Dig, although my first WD drive came in defective! I have one system with 6 Maxtor drives 7200 rpm, been running great, and another 3 Maxtor drives running in other system all great. I think Maxtor build a high quality drive. I think WD builds a very good perfromaing drive, but their quality is not as good as Maxtor. I am phasing out my IBM drives and then no more. As it is they sold that division to Hitachi so IBM is out of low end disk drive business.

Its yet another dismal review of camcorders. The Value Watch does not include image quality as one of its measured values! In fact under Editor's Ratings image quality gets rated only a mere 30 points.

It is a good looking table in spite of what it has wrong...

IBM seems to be doing a lot of "strange" things with their drives
for more than a year now. I'm not buying from them anymore
at the moment. I'll stick to other brands.

But the golden rule still applays for any: BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP

My 75GXP 20 gig has been great for 2 years now... But I'm in Canada, so it doesn't mean jack all if my drive did die. I house my DV stuff on a WD JB drive though :D

One thing I thought I'd add. I've found that you get a much better deal by getting your own hard drive rig together. For example, take a Western Digital WD1200JB With 8 MB Cache, and find yourself a good external firewire case, put em together, and you've got yourself a blazing fast external firewire drive that will satisify all your needs for DV, much lower cost, and top-dollar performance and reliability. And pricepoints on drives these days suggest that you could get two 120 Giggers for the price of one 200 Gigger.

Some info on the WD1200JB w/8MB Cache
http://www4.tomshardware.com/storage/20020305/index.html

And a link to some firewire cases. Haven't used these particular cases, but they're all about the same. I don't think these are Firewire 800, but I'm sure a little searching on the Net could yield that type of case too.

I've spent a fair amount of time this past month working with Vegas Video 3. I've had this program for nearly a year and basically never touched it because. . . well. . . I have two really good midi/audio recording programs. Vegas Video does nothing with midi, and my studio is total a midi setup!

Until I decided to explore the video capabilities of Vegas Video 3!

I'm one happy camper with this program with regards to the video editing I've accomplished this past month (simple as it may be)! I will, of course, score any incidential music using the other programs. But then I'll mixdown all sound/music and video using Vegas Video 3. This program has not crashed on me once. . . yet! (Watch, now that I've said this, my computer is going to blow up!)

Vegas Video 4?!?!? I'll work extra overtime to shell out $$$ for that upgrade! It is also my understanding that Sonic Foundry will be offering a DVD authoring program as well. . . DVD Architect.

This is great news!

Hello everyone,

I'm currently organizing a panel discussion about DVD authoring and distribution for The New York Underground Film Festival ( http://www.nyuff.com ) and The Association of Independent Video and Filmmakers ( http://www.aivf.org ) this March. I am currently trying to find someone to speak on the panel who is a filmmaker that has made a movie specifically for the DVD format. I mean someone who organized the production, technique, and style of their work to fit in with the technical specs of the DVD format and features like multiple angles, multiple soundtracks, scripting, menus, and subtitles. I'm looking for someone who has done more than just produced a film and then encoded it into MPEG2 and added subtitles and commentary in post. I guess you could say that I'm looking for content that is more interactive than a traditional film.
Ideally, this person has made content that would fit in a film festival environment - especially, at the NYUFF, which is known for avant-garde and challenging fare. Any marketing, industrial, or event content will not really be appropriate. And, yes, I am aware that much of that type of content utilizes the advanced features of the DVD spec.
Basically, I'm looking for evidence that DVD technology can change the actual filmmaking form and not just distribution methods. I'm hoping that someone on this list is, or knows someone who is, producing something that fits within these guidelines. If so, and they'll be in New York City on March 8, I'd like to hear more about the project.

I should also specify that is not a "call for entries" for the festival. Inclusion on this panel would not mean that your work would screen at the festival outside of the panel.

Thanks very much.

I can't recall how I got there but but I can tell you how to do it:
http://www.customflix.com/Index.jsp
This group, which includes developers of the original Media Cleaner app, will convert your tape master to DVD for on demand production and delivery. They set up your e-store, complete with movie trailer, handle packaging and payment and mail you your share at month end. It's a very interesting alternative for those looking to sell content but unwilling to risk building inventory in advance of sales. They ship within 50 states but not yet outside the US, and although you can live anywhere as the content creator, you need a US Tax ID and a US postal address to get paid.

Before you try them ask to see their sales figures and their web statistics - how many hits do they get for instance?

If these figures are not large you'd be better off trying the same thing yourself.

Distribution and promotion is a complex field (and expensive) and cannot really be served best across only one medium!

Regards.

I bought it last week, as some of my friends shoot footage for me (with their cameras) and when I edit this into my cameras footage their hiss is much louder.

It seems to drop the hiss and noise but it also drops all the levels (dialogue included) so its hard to tell how good it is just yet. Need to do smoe more experimenting.

Anyone else tried it yet?

i got it and i've been pretty happy with it. i found that i got the best results by bouncing my soundsoap settings and then passing the audio through SuperFreq.

on caveat, is that if you get too aggressive with SoundSoap, you end up with a sterile sounding track. *some* ambient noise is necessary... ;)

just my own experiences.

Hi Dan,

Yes, I know Geoff Zimmerman personally and that's why I post these notices here for him. He has worked for Penelope Spheeris in the past (she is one of my favorite filmmakers) and he has quite a track record. His camps are a good deal, and I'm happy to help promote what he does.

The Jan/Feb 2003 issue of Res Magazine (www.res.com) features a list of houses that specialize in transferring video to film. The compilation provides a very good summary of what each house offers, their average prices per minute for each film format and contact information.

(Note: At this writing this issue of the magazine is not yet on their Web site.)

Panasonic has announced two new MiniDV camcorders into the Japanese Market. The first is the NV-GS70K, a three chip model and the second is the NV-GS50K which only includes one chip, but comes in four different colors.
The NV-GS70K include three chips, although we don't know their size or resolution. We do know however that the camcorder can record 1,280 x 960 pixel resolution stills to SD cards, and that it includes an 8 MB SD card. The camcorder also includes the Magic wand, which was provided with the US Panasonic PV-DV953. The wand functions as wired zoom and record controller. The camcorder can also record MPEG4 video to the SD card.

Panasonic Japan also announced the NV-GS50K, a single chip camcorder. The NV-GS50K also can record digital stills to SD cards, as well as MPEG video. It includes an 8 MB SD card. The NV-GS50K also comes in four colors including: a standard silver, a red, yellow and a blue color.

We were unable to get pricing or availability information on the camcorders or information on when they would be available in the US.
