View Full Version : Greetings from Ontario Canada
Dale C. Elliott October 14th, 2002, 07:02 AM Hi, I just joined a couple of weeks ago. This is a great site. I have been out of the business for the last 4 - 5 years and just getting back into my own production company. Before that I had worked in TV Broadcasting for 7 years. I hail from Brockville, Ontario Canada.
Anybody out there from Eastern Ontario?
I am waiting on the arrival of my XL1s and I am in the process of purchasing the Pinnacle Pro-1 RTDV editing system.
I have a couple of projects in the planning stage, which will deal with the history of railways in Ontario.
I look forward to chatting with some of you.

Dylan Couper October 14th, 2002, 12:21 PM Hi, I'm originaly from the Niagara region. I knew someone that lived in Brockville, but I can't remember his name. Dark hair, medium height, do you know him? :)
Rob Lohman October 16th, 2002, 12:32 PM Welcome aboard Dale! Good to have you with us. You've got
yourself a sweet camera there! Probably waiting for it is killing
you? :) heh... Anyways, see you around!
Phil French October 20th, 2002, 12:49 AM I know you're going to enjoy your new XL1s and being able to work on what you want - when you want. Welcome aboard!
Dale C. Elliott October 21st, 2002, 07:59 AM Thanks for the warm welcome. I just received my XL1s on Friday, and spent the weekend using it. Wow, what a nice machine.
Dale
Rob Lohman October 21st, 2002, 11:23 AM I can imagine Dale! I can remember that a couple of years back
(when I wasn't into video/movie production at all) I saw the XL1
in an ad or something and thought.... WOW. That looks amazing.
I then thought wouldn't it be great to have such a piece of
equipment. Now I own one. I bought mine almost a year ago
on a evening in December and I was completely not on this
planet for a week or something. Couldn't help but stare at it. Heh.
Good luck with yours!

John Locke November 12th, 2002, 09:25 PM Welcome, Dale!
My grandfather was an engineer on the Santa Fe for 40 years...and so I've had this fascination for trains and the railroad lifestyle my entire life. Please keep us posted. I'd love to see your footage when it's ready.
See you on the boards.
Patrick Mollins January 9th, 2003, 07:06 AM Just So I can introduce myself, I thought I'd reply to this message. I am in Ottawa. I expected to see a few more Eastern Ontarion posts here.

Sure!
You can start your own introduction thread. You don't have to post in this one. Most people start a new thread. That why you don't see a lot of Ontario posts in this one alone.
Dale C. Elliott January 9th, 2003, 05:00 PM Welcome aboard Patrick, like Dylan said you can start your own. I had started this one when I first signed up.
I am from Brockville, I have not heard from too many from this neck of the woods.

Bryan Beasleigh April 30th, 2003, 10:58 AM Frank
When I was shopping areound and still undecided I got my best price on an XL1S at. Edcom have branches all over Ontario and prices seem to vary with just how hungry the salesman is when you call.
Edcom Multimedia Products Inc.
350 Shirley Ave. Units 9 & 10
Kitchener, Ontario N2B 2E1
Telephone : (519)578-2260
Andrew Petrie May 8th, 2003, 10:17 AM I'm very surprised you got a good deal at Edcom. The Edcom her ein London deals primarily in Panasonic, I don't know what it's like elsewhere.
I think Edcom may deal with Vinten...

Frank Granovski April 13th, 2004, 07:10 PM Welcome Pete! Where from Ontario? Kenoro? Ottawa? Niagra Falls? :-))
I used to live just outside of Dinorvic (probably not spelled right---it was a long time ago).
Dylan Couper April 13th, 2004, 07:22 PM Hey Pete!
I used to live in the Niagara region before I wised up and moved to Vancouver. :)
Pete Mander April 14th, 2004, 01:05 PM Thanks!
Hmmmmm Vancouver?.....very odd you mention this...I have the vancouver sun and a few realstate adds saved in my favs for house searching..just need to get the wife more interested...she says it rains to much there..LOL
never been there myself. but I do have many reasons to get out of this small little gargen city.
-Pete
Dylan Couper April 14th, 2004, 04:42 PM It does rain alot.
On the other hand, I remember one sunny day this Febuary, I was washing my car in shorts and a t-shirt and got a phone call from my sister in Ottawa where it was -20.
Frank Granovski April 14th, 2004, 05:17 PM And don't forget our most lovely, "Wreck Beach."
Graeme Nattress April 14th, 2004, 06:29 PM I'm just outside of Ottawa - but I'm originally from the North of England, so I'm well aware of both PAL and NTSC, and have even gone to the bother of writing software to convert between them.
PAL is only really of use in Canada if you intend your video to end up on film - otherwise those extra 100 lines of resolution are more hassle than they're worth. I've had to get multi-standards gear for the most part so that I can keep working on my UK projects, and be able to test things like standards converters. But I decided to get an NTSC camera because of the compatability over here, and that I can experiment getting 24p rather than 25p, which altogether a greater challenge - but one I managed to crack! But my deck is the DSR-25, which is PAL and NTSC and very useful!
Graeme
Frank Granovski April 14th, 2004, 07:20 PM PAL is only really of use in Canada if you intend your video to end up on filmI can think of 2 other reasons for using PAL in Canucksville.
Graeme Nattress April 14th, 2004, 07:30 PM You're producing for the Beeb?
Graeme
Pete Mander April 14th, 2004, 08:30 PM the what? lost me here...LOL
Frank Granovski April 14th, 2004, 09:00 PM I saw someone with a 24P today. I was taking pictures with my Nikon FM2T and he was videoing me taking pictures (with my Nikon FM2T). This was at Kits Beach (no, not Wreck Beach) late afternoon.
2 reasons:
* if you already have pal gear, including PAL TV
* sending footage to your loved ones in PALsville - why convert? Just shoot PAL. :-))
Dylan Couper April 15th, 2004, 01:54 AM <<<-- Originally posted by Graeme Nattress : You're producing for the Beeb?
Graeme -->>>
BBC?
Frank, did you take a picture of the guy taking a video of you while you were taking a picture of him videoing you?
Frank Granovski April 15th, 2004, 02:23 AM No. I only had my 50mm on. The 135 would have worked. The guy looked familar. I think I saw him at Leo's once, or somewhere.
Pete Mander April 15th, 2004, 03:11 AM Well ....this is turning out to be quite the welcome thread..LOL
wayyyyy to much info on this forum, think My head is gonna pop!. now I whant to get a better camera. man oh man!
Frank Granovski April 15th, 2004, 04:00 AM wayyyyy to much info on this forum, think My head is gonna pop!. now I whant to get a better camera.Shooting good video isn't difficult. Shooting great video is difficult, and costly (audio, lighting). Even though I've always been into photography, I find take a good picture is more difficult than taking good video...unless I have a Nikon F5 (or Leica M7) for taking the pictures. :-))
The 3 biggest secrets to shoot good video are:
* get a decent tripod
* don't shoot into your main light source.
* use the KISS method: "keep it simple stupid."
Dale C. Elliott May 16th, 2004, 05:49 AM Hi Pete, welcome aboard. What part of Ontario are you from? I am in Brockville along the St. Lawrence River south of Ottawa.
Kaleem Maxwell August 12th, 2004, 07:24 PM Hi! Hello! and Greetings!
I'm Kaleem Maxwell, from Mississauga, Ontario, Canada (just west of Toronto). I am currently a 4th year university student studying multimedia.
Right now I run a media endevour, K-Max Media Entertainment which covers niche shows like fandom events, bodybuilding shows and more. I've recently started video services and hope to do well.
My site's URL is: www.kmaxmedia.com
My first camera was a JVC GR-DVA1 (yes, a DV camera with NO firewire... ugh) but I am now a proud owner of a Canon GL2... so now I can rule the screens muahahah!
I use a pinnacle DV500 card with Premiere 6.5. Also had experience in doing TV studio work and after effects.
Well, nice to meet everyone and hope to get to know some of you guys...
Rob Lohman August 13th, 2004, 02:13 AM Welcome aboard Kaleem! It's good to have you with us. Enjoy
the site and forums!
Justin Sammarco August 13th, 2004, 08:56 AM welcome Bud! If you need anything let me know I'm right over the boarder in Buffalo NY.
Read my intro to get an idea of what I do...maybe we can work together in the future sometime...
Kaleem Maxwell August 13th, 2004, 09:32 AM Sure, maybe we can work together one day. I've done web programming, so if you're looking for assistance in doing, web stuff feel free to pick at my brain.
Alex MacDonald February 21st, 2005, 07:28 AM Hi everybody. I am graduating from Wilfrid Laurier University at the end of the term with a BSc in biology, but my real passion lies in video production and web design. I currently own a lowish end, consumer camera (ZR60) and have decided to take just a *slight* step up and go with the GL2. I have been researching a lot, and thanks mostly to this site, i am very confident with my decision. I will be doing the customary after-graduation tour of Europe this summer, and the GL2 looks like it'll be very portable.
I have one question that I'm hoping you can answer...
I am looking on eBay for new GL2s and i've found this reseller:
<link removed by moderator>
US $2,299.99 (Approximately _C $2,832.09) gets you the GL2 along with a bunch of bonuses. I just want to know if this is a good deal or if some of you experts see something wrong with the deal. The member has a Feedback Score of 21347 and Positive Feedback of 99.2%, so I'm not so nervous about getting ripped off, just wanted to double check.
Thank you,
Alex MacDonald
Rob Lohman February 21st, 2005, 09:11 AM Hello Alex and welcome aboard DVInfo.net!
If it is too good to be true.... if it is a company then they are
probably not includig the full package or trying to sell you all
sort of expensive accessoires.
Please stick with our board sponsors (http://www.dvinfo.net/sponsors/index.php), they are hand picked
by Chris for being the best in the business. They offer good
real world prices, excellent service and you will help maintain
this board.
You can do searches on this board for the various sponsors to
see that they are highly regarded.
Thank you!
Edit: I just checked EVS and they have it for $2295.95 as well:
http://www.evsonline.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=7920A001&Category_Code=2A2&Product_Count=0
B&H just gave me a quote of: $2,095.00
Alex MacDonald February 21st, 2005, 09:20 AM Thanks for the reply. I'm in Canada, how does the warranty work if i buy from a US reseller?
Dylan Couper February 24th, 2005, 10:44 PM If I'm not mistaken, if you buy it from the US, you will have to ship it back there for the warrenty. You'd be best to phone and ask though.
