View Full Version : Greetings from Ontario Canada Patrick Moreau March 15th, 2005, 10:31 AM I'm in St Catharines, which is the Niagara region. Patrick Dylan Couper March 15th, 2005, 07:15 PM I went down to Home Depot today to get a new pressure washer to clean my deck. I wore shorts, a t-shirt and sandals. I do miss playing hockey on the Welland river. I used to live right on it in Pelham. Jerry Munsie March 16th, 2005, 01:37 PM Woot!! Woot!!! lets here it for St. Catharines....I too am from there..well actually I'm still here. I have a small production crew here...We did a film about 2 years ago using a GL1 and Final Cut Pro...I have just recently purchased a DVX100a and we will be using Premier Pro to edit on. Dylan Couper March 16th, 2005, 05:40 PM Is the discount cinema still on St. Paul Street? How about the green sushi house restaurant? Patrick Moreau March 16th, 2005, 05:58 PM Dylan, Discount cinema went down a couple months ago but they say they should be opening up again soon - lets hope so, they are still at $4 a seat. The green sushi place i'm not too sure of. There is a sushi place right downtown, but I dont recall green. Jerry, I tried to email you but the email bounced back... Jerry Munsie March 18th, 2005, 08:07 AM Patrick try either jerrymunsie@yahoo.ca or jerrymunsie@hotmail.com (It looks like I have the monopoly on that name :) As for sushi..yes the place is still there...used to be called Monks restaurant before that..(I work within 100' of the place :) The old Town cinema the cheapy cheap place...is closed but is suppose to re-open....and on sader news...The old Lincoln theatre on St. Paul street is going to be torn down by the owner..."the city can go to hell..my taxes are too high and do not reflect the times and service I am getting" so he plans to demo it in a few months. Matt Ramphal June 21st, 2005, 04:49 PM Hello... My name is Matt. I'm from Thornhill, which is about 15 mins out of downtown Toronto. Steve Shilson January 6th, 2006, 01:20 PM I've been coming here lurking in the shadows for the past few months and it seems like a great place. I'm Steve Shilson, I'm 18 years old and while finishing up my last year of film school in Michigan. . .I also work for a production company here in Windsor as an Editor/Camera-Op/everything else. My editing software of choice is Vegas 6, but I also use Premeire. I have been involved with making videos for bands such as Korn, Social Code, Ashes of Soma, Carried Away and The Afters. I've been involved in the making of a feature and I am the editor for a local cable TV show. So a quick summary. . .I'm young, I'm in love with the industry, willing to work my ass off, and I'm looking to learn from those who have been in the business for a long time. (I'm a sponge, soak me!) haha. Thanks, Steve Stephen Sawchuk January 6th, 2006, 01:49 PM Hey Steve, Welcome to the boards! I was wondering, which film school in Michigan did you attend? Steve Shilson January 6th, 2006, 02:37 PM Specs Howard, you're a Michiganer. . .you'd know. haha Stephen Sawchuk January 6th, 2006, 04:27 PM Cool, how'd you like it? I've heard mixed opinions about it. I went to the Motion Picture Institute of Michigan (MPI), which is based in Troy - mpifilm.com. Those are pretty much the only two non-college film school programs in Michigan, so I was going to say if you went to MPI, we might've shared a class. Anyway, see ya 'round the boards! Steve Shilson January 6th, 2006, 05:04 PM Specs Howard is a great atmosphere, nice teachers but not so great of an education. To be quite honest, the school hasn't tought me much! They really focus everything around news production, and 70-80% of us don't want anything to do with stuff like that. If I were to choose a school again, Specs wouldn't even be an option. I would have probably headed to Toronto. . . but I mean, I'm only 2 months away from being done. By the time I realized I wasn't getting what I wanted out of the school, it was just too pointless to back out. Sounds like I would have REALLY prefered MPI. . . Don McLeod May 14th, 2006, 08:14 AM Greetings to all members on this forum! Well done Chris and all who help to moderate - this really is a great place to be! My wife and I have a small hobby farm in the beautiful rolling hills near Millbrook, Ontario, Canada. We both work at a local community college. My interest in video is strong but my experience is light. I currently have a Canon S2 IS purchased last summer. Really enjoy the camera but have some questions which I will pose in another active thread. I would like to purchase a camcorder. Can any one suggest what forum category to post in with a request for specific recommendations? Thanks! Don Rob Lohman May 14th, 2006, 02:33 PM Hi Don, good to have you with us here on DV Info Net, welcome aboard! Our Open DV Discussion (http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/forumdisplay.php?f=35) forum is our general forum. There are a lot of threads already in there from people trying to figure out which video camera to buy. Take a look around that forum and if you can't find what you are looking for (you can search within just that forum if you want) post a new thread there. Good luck! Don McLeod May 14th, 2006, 03:40 PM Hi Rob - thanks for the welcome! I did a few searches - also checked out the 'Open DV Discussion' forum and will make a post there. Michael Steeves June 7th, 2006, 10:14 AM Hello dvinfo, and Don, I'm from Rural Ontario as well. Grand Valley Ontario. Lots of nice places to shoot with your video camera in rural Ontario. Keep it real. M Don McLeod June 19th, 2006, 11:43 AM Hi Michael, Been away from the DV info site for a while so missed your post. Thanks for the greeting! I used to live in the Hanover - Durham area many years ago and travelled through Grand Valley area a couple of times. That entire region is very scenic with lots of fabulous rivers and streams. Now I'm in the Kawartha Lakes region, different countryside but also beautiful. When I first joined this forum I owned a Canon S2 IS digital camera and was looking for a video camera. I have interests in wildlife and car racing video (extremes I know but that's me for now). Got some good advice from Gary Silverman on stock car racing video equiipment - Sony VX2100 - but had trouble finding one here in Ontario and the price was out of reach. So, recently I decided to go for the Canon Optura 50 and get some experience. Then in a couple of years when all this HD stuff gets more reasonable, upgrade to a more professional camera. The main thing is for now I'm having fun with the camera! ~ Don Hugh DiMauro July 3rd, 2006, 10:23 AM Hey Don! Millbrook, Ontario! Didn't your city double for Millbrook, Kansas, in David Cronenberg's "A History of Violence"? Don McLeod July 13th, 2006, 04:29 PM Yes, you are correct. It was quite the commotion, especially when Viggo Mortensen was around. Millbrook, Ontario, really is a very small 4 corners type of town yet has several viable businesses along the main street; typically that is where all the filming takes place. A number of films have been done in the town and so the town residents have more or less gotten used to it. We actually live in a rural area outside the town so there was no imposition on us other than when we wanted to go the local hardware or grocery store. It has earned the town residents some bragging rights I guess! Hugh DiMauro July 14th, 2006, 06:56 AM Don: You have a nice little town there. I'm an independent writer, video artist and filmmaker with my own production company DragonGem Productions. Just joined, and looking forward to learning from you all, as well as hopefully imparting any knowledge I can that may be helpful. I've already learned a great deal from "lurking" for awhile. Cheers, and I hope to get to know all of you soon! Rob Lohman April 8th, 2007, 12:38 PM Hi Lyndon, welcome aboard DV Info Net, it's good to have you with us! Peter Manojlovic July 4th, 2007, 06:43 PM Greetings everybody... Usually i'd comment on the coldness up here, but due to global warming, I'll have to say 'Ola for now. Just picture me with a drink that has an umbrella rather than my snowblower for now... Anyhoo, i've been a digital video nut since i digitized my first VCR transfer. I primarily come from the inner depths of the frameserving and encoding community... Several years ago, advanced NLE's opened my eyes to more wonderfull things, but like every hobby, it gets expensive very fast. To pay for this interest, i tagged along a local Video company, and have done several weddings..Of course, i've done several myself, but have slowed down in the last year. Unfortunately, children, work, and life got in the way....I'm slowly making a comeback, and when i see people like Patrick Moreau present beautiful wedding videos into an artform, it makes me want to get up and start fresh again... I'll be picking up my new HP wX9300 workstation, and have a few basic questions to ask beforehand...I'm an Adobe fan and love Premiere, Photoshop, and am trying to sink my claws into After Effects.. For now, i'll head on over to the Display/monitor section, so come and join me.. I'm looking forward to learn from this community, and to share whatever knowledge my little brain can offer.... Heath Taylor July 14th, 2007, 09:44 AM Hi Everyone, Another one from Ontario. I have a small videography business on the side from my full time job at a brokerage. I mainly shoot weddings and small events. Been doing it for a while but still lots to learn as I have been changing my setup and starting to use different NLE's. Have a great one. Simone Maurice July 15th, 2007, 12:10 PM Hey Heath, I'm a digital content producer from the GTA! It's nice to meet you. I'm somewhat new to the forum as well. Have been reading it for a while now and finally decided to join. The forum is a great souce for info, I'm sure you'll learn tons more! P.S. What kinds of NLEs are you starting to use? All the best, Simone Simone Maurice July 15th, 2007, 12:15 PM Hey Peter, From the GTA over here. I'm a digital content producer. Nice to "meet" you online! Andrew McDowell July 22nd, 2007, 11:51 AM Welcome but isnt it nice to pack up our snowblowers for awhile. or not buy one in the first place and spend it on equipment? Peter Manojlovic July 23rd, 2007, 07:43 AM Never mind the snow equipment.... I'm having to sell some of my prized guns to pay for this habit..... I'll be donating organs at this rate...Oh well.. Rob Lohman August 5th, 2007, 08:11 AM Hi Heath & Simone, welcome aboard DV Info Net, great to have you with us! Rob Lohman August 5th, 2007, 08:17 AM Welcome aboard DV Info Net all. Good to have everyone with us! Justin Terreberry March 3rd, 2009, 10:51 PM This thread is getting oldd. Hi there, I'm Justin; I'm currently living in the Niagara Region, but use to live in Midland. I'm currently going to school @ Niagara College for Mechanical Engineering Technology. I fell in love with video after taking a communications class in high school. I have a Canon HV20 w/t VideoMic along with FCE 3.5 to edit with. Most videos that I make at the moment are short 5 min things for either friends or church. I'd like to upgrade to JVC's new HM100 when it comes out at the end of April. Hopefully when I go back to work on the ships sometime in May, I'll have an HM100 along with me to make somewhat of a documentary of what life is like on a ship (assuming it's all right with the captain). I look forward to learning a lot from this place. |
