I thought the article wording could have been a little more balanced in comparing the supported media and codecs that the HD100 provides. The article lists 3 recording media and multiple DV/HDV codecs for the HVX-200 but then says the HD100 has only has one HDV format to tape. The HD100 also supports a DV codec, 1 hour of HDV to miniDV (~$10) tape (versus no HD to tape and ~10 minutes of DVCProHD 100 to a ~$2000 P2 card on the HXV-200), and has an HDD (Firestore) option. The HVX-200 is promising multiple resolutions, so there's definitely a Panasonic advantage there.

That said, the suggestion that the HD100 support 4:2:2 to HDD is interesting. Barry Green said that the HD100's MPEG-2 encoder chips could not support 60p, can they support 4:2:2?

In fact, there will not now, nor ever be, any way for this particular camera to record 60p -- not to hard disk, not to tape, not through firewire to an external recorder. Won't happen, because the NTT MPEG-2 encoder chips in the camera can't support 60p, even though 60p is part of the HDV spec.

Panasonic promises higher quality compressed output. Adding higher quality output for HDD to the HD100 would, as Michael's article suggested, give JVC the clear "gold medal" given its huge advantage in the lens department.

You got to love competition!

There are plenty of golds to go around. Everyone can have a gold. Panasonic and JVC both can be equal winners as with all other companies too. I want companies to do quite well. It's good for the market, and it's good for business.

In the past, formats and tape transport had to be designed together. How many heads at what speed, etc etc. Today it's much different. It's getting kinda like one of my digital still cameras but just less data then HD video. It's all data when we go to using memory based media. My digital camera can shoot stills or do avi at 1.8 mega bytes per second at 30-fps. Actually this video looks better then some camcorders because it's progressive and not NTSC.

So, JVC can do this same thing. Sending out a better version only to firewire drive or also called HDD. JVC's lens can not be beat. No way around it. I am working on a lens article right now that will demonstrate this. If the article is good, it will get put up. Everyone that saw the JVC can't knock it. It's a small, but a very professional camera. All cameras are getting small, this is the future for all cameras. JVC's picture quality has been described as being Cinealta like. That's by people who work with Cinealta. That speaks millions, I just want it to carry into the future and by offering other data streams out firewire to hard drive gives the buyer more options, and JVC more of the market pie, as well a gold.

Michael, sorry to be spliting hairs. Maybe what you posted should be listed as Editorial rather than article. Other than that, great piece.

Excellent and really thought-provoking articles, Michael! I certainly hope they get to the decision makers at Panasonic, JVC, Canon, and Sony.

The analog outputs on the JVC may in the end prove more flexible than the Pany. I can forsee a wide variety of possible attachments. Could a WVHS record 720p60?
