Here's a question from another green horn.
I have a GL2 and want to video wildlife. I want a mic that will allow me to whisper and yet pick up good quality audio. Any recommendations?
My budget is about $300.

I'm not sure this would be right for you, but I have been pretty happy with my ATR 55. It is priced at around $100- 150, and has two modes, stereo and zoom, which is a mono shotgun. Unlike the standard on cam mic, it actually gets most of the sound in front, and not just me talking.

Sorry... I just reread what you want. The ATR won't do you much good at all. The Azden line of wireless mics are affordable, and work pretty well for me as well.

I would suggest perhaps a battery powered Giant Squid Audio lav mounted (somehow or another) to the back of your camera where you would be. You wouldnt need an entire wireless unit, as the mic would have its own power and would be plugged directly into the camera itself, and the mic element would be (taped/velcroed or other attachment solution) to the back of your camera, perhaps near the viewfinder, and pointed directly at you as you look through it and whisper.
