My DAWs (Digital Audio Workstation like NuEndo or Samplitude) can use MIDI messages to control things on-screen.

For example, if I have a Mixer that can send MIDI messages, I can slide a fader up on the mixer, and see onscreen that the mixer in Nuendo has it's fader moving up just like the hardware.. I can turn a pan knob on the mixer, and on screen the pan knob in NuEndo for that track will turn as well. Of course I have to set this all up and assign MIDI messages coming from the mixer to certain onscreen devices, etc.

So my question is, do any of the NLEs like Avid or Premiere, or even After Effects have this capability? Can I use a MIDI control surface to send MIDI messages to the software to control certain functions onscreen?

Simle things like mapping the jog wheel on my controller to moving stuff around the timeline onscreen, using the play, rwd, ffwd, pause, etc. on the mixer to control those same fucntions for playing, rewinding, etc. the video would be great.

Anyone know?

Vegas does.

Contour sells Shuttle devices that let you do things like have a jog wheel that does fast forward, rewind, etc.

Many editing programs work for them.

If you want a control surface to control the audio mixing in your application, then Vegas supports that. In most other editing programs you have to export an OMF to use in an audio program.

Note that the control surface will also work with VIDEO tracks as well.

Thanks for the replies. I kinda figured that Vegas would since it is also a multitrack DAW app and kinda came from there.

Unfortunately, I don't really use Vegas much. I have access to it, but I use other software instead.

I didn't want to have to get another control surface like the Shuttle Pro (though it does look nice and is reasonably priced) since I already have a few control surfaces around for recording audio. I was hoping that maybe Avid or Premiere would understand MIDI. :-( I know that Edirol makes a control surface for video editing, but I think that it is pricey. I would rather use something like a Roland SI-24 and configure it to work with those NLEs.
