Hi!
Can any one name some good books for Video Newbies
(Something like "What everyone should know `bout Video and NLE" or "1000 things about Video / NLE you would not ask 4" ...)
After working "like a pro" for about 3 years, I need some literature to learn the basics... ;-)
Thx
ZoLO
Uuups... Sorry 4 posting this here! please post replies at "General DV Discussion > Books 4 Newbies (sorry 4 Thread in XL1 Watchdog!)"

Here are a few of my top picks:
Producing Great Sound for Digital Video, by Jay Rose
American Cinematographer Video Manual, 3rd edition
Digital Moviemaking, by Scott Billups
The Low Budget Video Bible, by Cliff Roth
The Five C's of Cinematography, by Joseph V. Mascelli
Film Art: An Introduction, by David Bordwell & Kristen Thompson
Technique of Film & Video Editing: Theory & Practice, by Ken Dancyger
Thinking in Pictures, by John Sayles
Notes of a Film Director, by Sergei Eisenstein
I have scores of books, but these are the ones I turn to most often...
Guess you better add Rebel Without a Crew, by Robert Rodriguez, since it's the first entry in the DVinfoNet Virtual Library...
Suppose I should make an Amazon book list and try to generate a little income for the site...
Also watch for the forthcoming Filmmaking by FireWire, due out soon by my friend Scott Smith, from PeachPit Press. Hope this helps,

Hey ZolO
I'm posting Rebel without a Crew to Chris in the next few days so if you want it after him let him know.
If anyone else has any books they could contribute post them to the DVinfoNet Virtual Library thread in General DV Discussion

Does anyone know of any remarkable books on lighting? I know nothing on the subject.
Thanks.

try masters of light. It was written for film, but you can still learn quite a bit from it. Just a suggestion:}

as a general intro to video/film/still lighting i would recommend Ross Lowell's book "Matters of Light and Depth". Its not a thick one, but it presents the over all concepts of artistic lighting, and some studies, and also presents a list of recommended titles on lighting.

books i found helpful that i read are:
shot by shot by steven katz; (good general purpose read)
the five C's of cinematography by joseph mascelli; (nice descriptions and explanations about the "why's" in shooting/editing)
cinematography SE by kris malkiewicz; (covers a lot more technical aspects than five C's. types of films, camera, lights, filters, etc)
