Should I have this ON or OFF??

What is it? What does it do exactly? Does it modify what is being recorded to minidv tape? or does it just modify what is displayed in the view finder? or the lcd screen? or the field monitor connected via composite? or all of the above?

What's the advantage of one over the other? And if there is an advantage...why include it as an option? Why not just hard-code the best one and not give us the opportunity to screw things up?

From reading the manual it's supposed to reduce flourescent and short discharge lighting flicker when shooting 60i in 50i countries and vice versa. I'm curious how it works as I have an uncoming shoot in India and would prefer to shoot 60i. If some one in a 50i country with a Z1 could run a test and see how well this filter works, I'd be very grateful.

Sony has had this option since Hi8. Either it filters out the 10Hz beat frequency or it simply switches to the correct shutter-speed.

In India I always shoot at 1/100th (anytime there is artificial lite) and for 2 decades that has solved the problem.

Yeah, I shoot 100th sec with my PD150 but I'd rather not lose more exposure with the less sensitive Z1, though, if the filter actually works well.

It should be that hard to notch-out 10Hz.

I'm guessing you meant "shouldn't". In the Z1 manual it says "reduce" flicker. As well, there's the question of the amount of anciliary efects on the image. I suppose Icould borrow the camera again and test it in 50i mode against a 60Hz short discharge light - if I can find one these days.

is this "reduction" recorded on tape? or just on the lcd flipout/vf/ext. monitor for viewing pleasure while recording?

and what should I keep it on? YES or NO?

Yes it's recorded to tape. Generally you'd keep it off unless you needed to reduce flicker.

OK....so what if I am using KINOFLOW light banks?

Say we have two 4x4 kino's lighting the bad guys in a dark warehouse scene and a 2x4 lighting the hero who is about to save the girl.

Do I use FLCKER REDUCE for the kinos? or leave it off?

The Kinos are not short discharge AND they're operating at 60Hz. No need for the filter.
