Im looking for suggestions for avoiding lense flare. The camera will be close to a brightly lit stage, with lights from all directions. Is there a filter possible that would be good for minimalizing this? Or any other suggestions?

You say a 'brightly lit stage' so I am assuming it's some sort of theatrical production. Not likely that you will be able to mount any type of flags to cut down flare, as that would be in the audience sight lines. Best bet is a mattebox with eyebrows, maybe a french flag. Beyond that, you could try and use the flare artistically, throw in a star filter so you get the ocasional star burst when you catch a flare. Not so good with a theatrical production, but might be okay with a fashion show, or music video.

Well it is a concert but since its a grateful dead thing they bring along quite a light show. Constent color shifts, lasers, smoke, video projection..ect. Problum is the lights are always moving so you never know where its going to come from. Ill have to check into a matt box. Im assuming there more pricey then I can afford. Any suggestions on a cheaper rig?

Look into your local rental house? A mattebox and french flags are going to set you back quite a bit to purchase. Too much for a one shot gig. But great to have nonetheless. You know your budget.
