I have a Canon XL1s and am leaving state (within the next 30 minutes) to film an automobile getting chemically stripped and ecoated. The facility this is done in has extremely poor lighting (as seen here: http://www.musclecarrestorations.com/ecoat.html).

How well do you expect the XL1s to perform in this place without assisted lighting?

xl1's do ok in lower light, just be sure to get a good WB. But Beware-Ive noticed they sometimes will cycle the WB in florecent light only.
