I want to say that Canon's frame mode is not a true progressive scan system whereas the new Panasonic is. Is this correct?

Yep.

Canon shift one of the CCDs (the green, I think) a partial pixel to accomodate capturing both of the fields at the same moment in time. The trade off is a loss of vertical resolution. (FWIW - I think that Adam Wilt has some rather detailed explanations of this and other things CCD in past articles over at DV.com)

The Panasonic DVX100 has true progressive CCDs, whether it be 24p or 30p.

An interesting post from the Stuart English of panasonic over at 2-pop.com a few weeks ago sheds some light on resolution of 480p footage. I'm paraphrasing, but as I understand it, you only get the full resolution when viewing on a progressive scan monitor...on a standard NTSC monitor if used at the full resolution there are artifacts that occur (twitter), so typically the user would choose a setting to lower the resolution some(pre-filter it) to keep things looking ok. I noticed this on some of the early clips that I saw from the agdvx100, in the pre filtered (thick detail) mode, it looked just like frame mode.

This of course is not an issue if you are taking your video to film, or just happen to have a fancy pro-scan monitor sitting around.

Can someone clarify what 480p is?

I understand that 24p and 30p are 24 fps progressive scan and 30fps progressive scan respectively. I also know that 600i is NTSC, 30fps interlaced and I assume that 480i is the PAL equivalent. I have not heard of 480p however.

480P in NTSC DV progressive scan, at 30 fps or 24 fps until someone comes out with a new cam.
