First post - and I do not even have one of these beauties. However I found a notice regarding the selection of 12/16 bit sound on these models - both PAL and NTSC. More details on the following link.

i.e. When the audio mode of HDR-FX1/HDR-FX1E camcorder is switched to the 16-bit setting (in DV mode), and the unit is then turned off, a software used in the camcorder causes the unit to reset to the default 12-bit setting, though the LCD indicator of the unit continues to display the 16-bit audio setting.

Serial numbers of affected models provided. There is a software fix.

It seems that I might have this issue with my HDR-FX1E.
I haven't shot any DV until now, so I haven't noticed the issue. But now we shot some DV with 16bit 48kHz audio set. But when we tried to get it to Premiere Pro, all the clips are infact 12bit 32 kHz. I have to do some more tests, but it seems there might be cameras out there with this flaw, outside of the Asia Pacific region, and outside those serial number boundaries reported there.

The issue is only when shooting DV. All HDV material is 16bit 48kHz anyway. But I'd encourage everyone with an FX1E to test their recorded audio after turning off the camera. If your non-linear editor says it's 48kHz then your camera is allright.

I checked the serial No. and sure enough it was one of those mentioned.I then checked for the fault and sure enough it has the problem. I will need to check with Sony here in OZ to see what can be done to fix it.
