I'm trying to add a song in the back round of my video. I'm very new to FCP, but I always thought i have to just drop the file in the timeline. When I do that, I playback and it beeps with no song playing. Just an FYI, i'm using mp3 and deleting the audio recorded with the video. Am I doing something wrong?

The beeping is telling you that your audio needs to be rendered.Just push option R or Apple R and that should do it. You can avoid having to render it by converting it to an AIFF file if you have the capalbility.

Yes Eric, you are doing something wrong.

If you are working with standard DV footage shot with a MiniDV camcorder, the audio you import into FCP needs to be an AIFF file at 48kHZ. You can bring in an MP3 but its audio will need to be rendered, that's why you hear the beeping. To render your audio, use the keyboard shortcut command (Apple key) + option + r and it will render out your audio so that no beeping is heard.
