I recently purchased the XL Mini Mount for my Canon XL. The reason I purchased it was that it was suppose to eliminate Motor zoom noise, when you zoom in on things. I attached it to the camera and recorded footage and the noise is still there. I know that the system isolator is suppose to help eliminate the noise as well when combined with the Mini-Mount, but my understanding was that the system isolator is NOT necessary to be combined with the Mini-Mount. The Mini-Mount is suppose to eliminate the noise by itself.

My question is this:

Which one is better at eliminating noise by itself?
The Mini-Mount or System Isolator?

Or am I possibly hooking the Mini-Mount up wrong? What is the correct way to attach it?

I do not have the isolator and was advised that the MM (Mini-Mount) would work better with the isolator. However, I have not found the zoom noise a problem except under the quietest of conditions.

I do have the MM mounted backward because I did not want to overstress the mic cable.

You have the MM mounted backward ?

Can you explain how you have it backwards? Which part is placed where?

The MM mount (cylindrical extension) is inserted into the microphone mount. It can be placed into the mount from the front (lens side) or the back (camera battery side). Many people tighten the screws way too tight. Just tighten the screw enough to secure the mic. Do not overtighten as this seems to transmit some noise to the mic.

Instead of placing the MM facing backwards, with the mic mount behind the EVF, you plave the mount ahead of the EVF.

The disadvantage of this arrangement is it is harder to use the equalizer and you have to show more care to keep the mic out of the cam's view.
