View Full Version : Micro35 (original thread) James Hurd February 14th, 2005, 09:48 AM The DVX is awesome. You won't always use an adapter.... John Sandel February 14th, 2005, 10:54 AM Ha! ... I meant what's the content of the file? James? James Hurd February 15th, 2005, 11:48 PM Hey guys, I finished machining the first set of rails. I'll have the base powder coated this weekend. The base is adjustable for different cameras. www.micro35.com/pics/rails_side.jpg www.micro35.com/pics/rails_back.jpg www.micro35.com/pics/adj_base.jpg The nice thing about this setup is that you can use it without a micro35... Almost there!! John Sandel February 16th, 2005, 01:04 AM James, what do you think an assembled Micro35 rig will weigh? Rob LaPoint February 16th, 2005, 05:34 AM Hey James the new rail system is looking really good. I am just wondering if this is affecting the shipment of the micro 35 guides, or are you still just waiting on the printer to get them done? Keep up the great work man! James Hurd February 16th, 2005, 11:04 AM My guess is about 15lbs with my camera. With the new rail base, it's probably a few pounds lighter. My partner is handling the guides and I believe they're at the printers. So my full steam ahead has no affect on the guides. ;) Thanks guys! (I think you've got of those, right?) Craig Bellaire February 16th, 2005, 12:58 PM Just wondering if this is still a $45.00 adaptor? Let’s see... Custom GG, and now machined rods and base plate... Just thinking out loud.. James Hurd February 16th, 2005, 01:03 PM The magiqcam handles it just fine. You've got to adjust the springs a little with the allen wrench. It actually works better with the added weight. The rails and custom gg aren't part of the Guide or the device the guide helps you make. Although the output of both devices are nearly identical, the Pre-Assembled units will have the custom gg and rails. Both however, will be sold (inexpensivly) on the micro35 site for anyone needing them. james Imran Zaidi February 16th, 2005, 01:35 PM I think Craig just needs clarification - the $45 is for the guide with all the instructions and other information, not for the actual adaptor itself. It's not a "$45 adaptor" so to speak. Craig Bellaire February 16th, 2005, 01:55 PM I understand that... BUT it was stated that all updates would be included in the GUIDE... and now we are having machined parts and a different GG NOT IN THE GUIDE and that is not what was stated. What this thread started with was a $30.00 adaptor guide which went to a 45.00 adaptor guide “NOT OUT YET" which DOESN"T include the instructions on the new GG or the new Rods/ Rails... Maybe I am misunderstanding but once the new GG and Machined parts have been introduced to this thread it doesn't seem to me that this is a 45.00 guide that will show you how to make a 45.00 adaptor... Just maybe the business aspect, which I'm am not against has pushed this Guide plus parts to much more then what has been stated... and yes I'm gonna buy the guide as soon as it starts to be mailed.... The silly thing about me is that I have 2 Xl2's down stairs and a mini 35 400 series...WHY... because of my work...not at home. Plus I didn't feel too good about spending $10.000 on a $5.000 camera... AND I like to beat the system just like you...Anyway maybe I am misunderstanding. James Hurd February 16th, 2005, 02:04 PM Craig, Let me clarify. The guide describes how to make the adapter I used to make to horse video. I'd said that anyone who bought the guide would have access to any advances in the system. This includes vendors etc. So if you buy a guide and you don't feel like making the GG yourself, then I'll sell you one of my "production" ggs to help you out with your project. The original DIY adapter hasn't changed except for a modification made two weeks ago by flipping the adapter upside down to handle standard rail setups. The device still costs $45 to build and doesn't require any machining other than drilling a hole. So to clarify a bit further, anyone that buys a "kit" will get the latest parts. Anyone that buys a "Pre-Assembled" unit will get the latest parts AND the macro and rails. Sorry if I've made it a little confusing. James Craig Bellaire February 16th, 2005, 02:07 PM Thanks so Much... John Sandel February 16th, 2005, 02:32 PM "My guess is about 15lbs with my camera ... The magiqcam handles it just fine." Yes, I've noticed that heavier cameras are a little easier to smooth-out on my Series II arm (the older, 2-part arm John Gardner made). James, when you flew your Micro35 on the stabilizer, what camera did you mount & did you have any accessories on there with it? I know you're really busy, but if you were able to post any photos of your Micro35 on a MagiqCam, that would be a wealth of information. James Hurd February 16th, 2005, 02:41 PM John, Check your email. James John Sandel February 16th, 2005, 04:27 PM Got it. Thanks! This is all looking very good, James. You must be exhausted. Obin Olson February 16th, 2005, 10:43 PM what is the cost for you to build me a system James? and do you have a date for the book yet? I have more projects coming and I sure would like to shoot with the micro35! Brett A. Noe February 21st, 2005, 05:04 PM Haven't heard anything for awhile. Do we have a guide ship date yet? The original ship date was the 1st. It's now the 21st. Getting a wee bit antsy here. :) Brett Steev Dinkins February 21st, 2005, 05:10 PM Bababababa. I've just kinda figured my $45 is gone with the wind. Obin Olson February 21st, 2005, 08:29 PM don't be so fast to assume..I have been talking with James today many times in email...could he be a COMPLETE scam? yes .anyone can..it's easy...but I don't think this guy is...really... Steev Dinkins February 21st, 2005, 08:31 PM Heh, no, I don't think he's pullin a scam. I've just lost my enthusiasm and haven't been thinking much of it at all. I'm sure it'll be cool once it's ready and shipping/building/etc. James Hurd February 21st, 2005, 10:55 PM Okay Guys, I'm back. I've been busy finishing the first Pre-Assmebled unit. Check it out: www.micro35.com/lomo.htm Guide update: I've got the shipping materials ready to go, just waiting on the guides to arrive from printing. Thank you so much for your patience. James James Hurd February 21st, 2005, 10:56 PM Okay Guys, I'm back. I've been busy finishing the first Pre-Assmebled unit. Check it out: www.micro35.com/lomo.htm Guide update: I've got the shipping materials ready to go, just waiting on the guides to arrive from printing. Thank you so much for your patience. James Joshua Starnes February 21st, 2005, 11:00 PM Looks great. I've got a question about the Lomo version - I've got access to a few Lomo lenses and I'd rather use those than still lenses. Will it work with any mount, just the OCT-19 mount, any of the OKC mounts? Which Lomo lenses will it work with? Thanks. Actually, now that I look at the pictures again, I've got a completely unrelated question. Is that a Konvas matte box you're using in those pictures, or is it something else? Because I've been looking for a good matte box to use with Lomo lenses besides the standard issue Konvas one. James Hurd February 21st, 2005, 11:13 PM Joshua, On the LOMO mount, the guy I'm building it for sent me the OCT19 mount off of his 35mm movie camera. I haven't done any other research on them. I do know that the 50 lens he sent me to test with has very fast glass. I had to use an ND filter to test with. The matte box is a Chroziel. It's seems very solid. James John Sandel February 22nd, 2005, 12:25 AM Joshua, I'm not familiar with Lomo lenses. Why do you prefer them over still-camera lenses? Gearing, etc? Image quality? Jochen Stolle February 22nd, 2005, 10:35 AM Sorry but since some weeks i often find links to www.micro35.com but it looks like it's not existing whats up with it? Thank you for answer Jay P.s. sorry about my bad english James Hurd February 22nd, 2005, 10:38 AM Jochen, The site should be up. It's taken on some heavy traffic over the last day. Keep trying! Joshua Starnes February 22nd, 2005, 10:50 AM John; The gearing, the image quality, yeah, that sort of thing. They're cine lenses, built for the medium, so they don't breath. They're very fast, and for the money, very good glass. You can use a follow focus with them, they're built for the 35mm film frame, that sort of thing. James; Just out of curiosity, what step down rings did you have to use to get a good fit on the 50 mil? Jochen Stolle February 22nd, 2005, 11:06 AM Hi James Thank you I found it I ordert the guide. I'm using a Canon XM2 do you have a describtionin the guide? otherwise it would be Interesting to know is there anybody outside still having the adaption or serching for it maybe i can help constructing or building it. Joshua The LOMO lenses is it a lens from the Lenigrad opto mechanical product company? Or where does it come from? thanks Jay Shannon Rawls February 22nd, 2005, 01:03 PM James, Whoever you used for printing, make sure you don't go back to them! *smile* I have printed a MILLION flyers, books, cards, brochures & newsletters over my lifetime, my highest being 30,000 in quantity.....and none of them took this long. I want to build one of these for my Z1U (or try and figure a way to make it work). I was excited at first, but now i'm like *shrugs* - Shannon W. Rawls Joshua Starnes February 22nd, 2005, 01:21 PM <<<-- Originally posted by Jochen Stolle : Joshua The LOMO lenses is it a lens from the Lenigrad opto mechanical product company? Or where does it come from? thanks Jay -->>> Yes. They're made for Russian 35mm and 16mm cameras like the Konvas and the Kinor. While they're not as good as the slick stuff being produced to day, they're pretty good quality for the money. However, it sounds like if I want to use one on my DV camera, I have to dismantle my Konvas and send James the mount, and I don't really want to do that. I could convert the Konvas to a PL mount, I suppose, but I don't really want to do that either. Jochen Stolle February 22nd, 2005, 01:33 PM Joshua where did you get it? James Hurd February 22nd, 2005, 02:16 PM Joshua, Now that I've made the LOMO mount, I won't need a sample. The delay has partially been our fault, but I must say, the printers are certainly taking their time. That's what I get for trying to save money.... John Sandel February 22nd, 2005, 02:17 PM Re: Lomos I don't want to drag this thread off-topic. How can I email you off-list? Joshua Starnes February 22nd, 2005, 03:46 PM Yeah, I've got to talk about Chris about that - I can't find anything on the profile page to fix it. I'll e-mail you off list. Leo Mandy February 22nd, 2005, 04:52 PM So am I right in assuming that you are not using regular 35mm SLR lenses anymore James? Sorry, I was getting a bit confused with all the matte boxes and fast glass and lomo talk! James Hurd February 22nd, 2005, 04:59 PM Mandy, I'm still using 35mm SLR lenses. The LOMO setup was specified by the first "Pre-Assembled" unit order. Obin Olson February 22nd, 2005, 06:37 PM James I am still waiting for your call...do you have my number? Ivan Hurtado February 22nd, 2005, 06:45 PM James i just got my first 50 mm 1/8 Nikon and found a family treasure (80-200 2´8 all the way!)... But i have a question. I will probably buy one of the kits or pre-assembled cos it´s difficult to translate the terms (nobody in spain knows anything about ground glasses for example) And i will ask it for a XM1 (GL1)... But. It´s a nearly four years old camera and i´m thinking of the future and well discussed HDX... will it be difficult to change the configuration from one camera to the other? or i will be able to ask you for any piece to make it? Things are getting near and i´m loving it! Mi XM is getting excited... James Hurd February 22nd, 2005, 07:04 PM Obin, try me again. Ivan, switching cameras should be fine. I believe the new rail setup will adjust fine. Dave Frank February 25th, 2005, 01:05 AM What follow focus system do you recommend to use in conjunction with this system and say a set of Nikon MF lenses? Also, any thoughts to which lower-cost(under 2gs) steadicam rig? Also, I didn't seem to find the information on this thread about the loss of light with the adaptor. James Hurd February 25th, 2005, 09:22 AM Hey Dave, I've seen a cheaper follow focus unit on ebay, but haven't seen it in a while. I've thought about building one myself. The magiqcam is awesome. Thanks! Obin Olson February 25th, 2005, 09:41 AM JAMES I need to place an order...guys on the board..I don't know what mount to get for the first test run at this project...canon nikon? what? please help FAST as I have a project coming in for this setup and I need to make an order for some lenses for this unit ASAP James what did you use for glass on the pics with the matte box on teh front? Obin Olson February 25th, 2005, 09:44 AM what I feel would be the most important thing would be EASY SMOOTH focus.the WORST part of my homemade GG Adaptor is the focus..every friggen time I focus the image shakes. this is from the crappy mount I have ..how is the micro35? what LENS would give me a solid smooth focus? James Hurd February 25th, 2005, 09:49 AM Obin, I was using a Sigma 24-70 lens. You can achieve a smooth focus with this setup. But you must have a decent lens that isn't loose. The rails are very tight! Hope this helps! James James Webb February 25th, 2005, 05:58 PM James, could you please take a moment and give us all an informative and concise update on where you are with regard to: shipping the "how to" manuals, general R&D, the status of ordering the kits, taking orders on the pre-builts, etc., etc., etc. Thanks dude! Dave Frank February 26th, 2005, 01:06 AM Any thoughts on oscillating glass either? James Hurd February 26th, 2005, 03:02 PM James, I'm still waiting on the guides. The packages are ready to ship, I'm just waiting for the guides to arrive from the printers. I've been in contact with them several times. We've had problem after problem. Because of the long delay, I've decided to ship a new GG and sticker with every guide. I'm finished with R&D. I'm currently setting up the outsource production line. The standard adapter will use a C-Mount. Then depending on what lens system you order for, I'll use a C-Mount to SLR adapter. This should make every system the same and should keep assembly moving at a decent pace. Once the outsource assembly is up, I'll have parts to sell as "Kit only". I'll also be selling the parts individually for those who are building the adapter. I've taken several orders on pre-builts to help get the assembly process worked out. This is how we ended up with the new rails. By the way, the rails we be selling for $250 by themselves. Dave, Unless you just like spending money, there's no need for an oscillating glass. The current device looks just as good as any oscillating device I've seen. Hope this helps guys. James Dave Frank February 26th, 2005, 03:26 PM James, Not to get off topic or anything, but I thought the idea behind the oscillating glass was the ability to use higher f-stops. That ability would be great if it could be a part of the system. -Dave |
