Is this for real?

certainly looks real. i heard on nature channel that killer whales often do that to objects on surface of the ocean... for what reason i can't recall... perhaps som1 can google it.

When I scrub through this frame by frame, I can see that the orca surfaces some feet away from the kayak. When it comes down, it *appears* not to touch the kayak. Of course, a splash that size would capsize the guy anyway.

As intelligent as orcas are reported to be, it's hard to believe the animal didn't know these kayakers were there. It might be mere playfulness, but just the size of the thing is frightening!

Reminds me of some PBS footage I saw a year or two ago: a few orcas were hunting seals in Alaskan shallows--exactly like wolves, when they loiter-with-intent at the edge of an elk herd. One orca caught a seal and yanked his prey so hard the seal was snapped instantly from his skin, like a bloody bullet. Amazing power.

There is a 'problem' Orca off the coast of B.C. called Luna who has been giving boats a lot of rubbing this past year. Luna was an orphan who now seems to enjoy 'interacting' with humans but now is so big its attentions are damaging boats and scaring people.

You are not supposed to approach Orcas at all in the wild. They are big, can get pissed off, and are, after all, predators. They are not known to actively go after humans but they are social and intelligent animals with all the complexity that social and intelligent beings have.

The breaching activity seen in the video is thought to be like showing off or playing, not thought to be aggressive or hunting behaviour. So if the clip is true then it looks like the kayakers were just in the wrong place at the wrong time (if they were there by accident).

I showed my wife the video & she said "I bet he had to clean out his kayak after that."

That clip has been bouncing around for quite awhile... about three years, I think.

It was shot in South Korea while I was living there and it became THE hot internet clip. Pretty sure it's real since it made the regular news, too.

When I get my new 'yak in the spring, I'm getting an explosive tipped harpoon...

Protected species.... Endangered species.... It all fits on my BBQ with the help of a hacksaw....

That guy was lucky that the orca didn't send him flying with a good nose ramming. That is incredible footage.

I'm just wondering...after the kayaker returned home and people asked "How was your trip?" do you think he responded:

a. I had a whale of a time.
b. It was killer.
c. The sushi is a bit too fresh there.
d. (Nothing. He just starts blubbering. [pun intended])

a) got me laughing out loud.
