Dang I hate that deck in it's current state. If they'd fix it, I'd love it! JVC has been notorious on their "prosumer" line for "not conforming to the IEEE-1394 spec"

Try this, go into your Audio/Video Settings > Device control Presets and Switch to "FireWire Basic"

Check out http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/specs.html and click on "List of Qualified Devices" Unfortunately, they don't qualify this model, but the above solution is worth a try.

Good luck, I hope you can get it working for you. If not, take a look at the Sony DSR-11 - that model is rock solid, but yeah, mo' money. I'd say return it and get the Sony or Panasonic.

I had bought one at j&r and it dropped frames and no audio, they replace that unit and the other one did the same thing returned it. Bought a panasonic AG-DV2500 works like a horse!

Like I said above, this particular model/brand has a poor implementation of the IEEE-1394b spec. It is not just you. Across the net at other forums you will find reports of the same issues.
If the FireWire Basic mode doesn't give you perfect results, it's not worth the headache when there are tried and true models out there. I know the JVC is a great price (street $750), but until the next model/rev is stable, this deck is not a suggested model to use with FCP.
These other JVC models however, *DO* work with FCP - HR-DVS2 and BR-DV3000U.

You don't think it could just be the cheap IEEEE (4 pin) wire that comes with the unit? I had it working for a long time, after the intial trial and tribulations, and now it stopped working after a couple of new pieces of hardware was inserted into the mac (video card, ram, FCP Pro Studio 5). The SVHS deck feature is really nice to dub onto from MiniDV.

I have had no problems with different types or lengths of MiniDV tape.
