I planning to buy on-camera lighting kit...so can anyone explain to me is Canon XL1s Universal Shoe Mount or 1/4-20 screw mount?

The Canon XL1 has a standard shoe mount on top of the EVF bracket that can be used for a camcorder light or some third party and after market mics or wireless mic receivers. Details are in the manual, you can download it from the canondv.com web site.

Thanks Don,
I couldn't find any detail in Instruction manual. it only mention about "HOTSHOE".

So Will it be compatible of the Mount Type for video light with Universal Shoe Mount or 1/4-20 screw mount?

I can't really help with the XL-1s specific part, but I CAN tell you that 1/4 20 is the thread size for the tripod socket on most camcorders. My GUESS would be that a 1/4 20 mount somehow attaches to the tripod socket with some sort of bracket.

The illustration on page 9 of the manual shows the top accessory shoe, and page4 60 shows installing a flash-type light. There are a number of third party camcorder lights thwat would use this socket as well as the Canon models. I use the shoe with a Sony HVL-20DW2 and with a MiniCool light on my XL1. Which light I use depends on how much light I need.

The bottom of the camcorder has a standard tripod socket, see the ilustration on page 10.

Which you would use depends on the design of the type of lighting rig you get.
